Not to worry, my brain definitely had chickens in the picture too. But I figured someone else would peck at that. Perhaps the roof rack will work as a chicken roost.

I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the various options that will come available for the CT. Even just the roof rack ideas that have shown up here are great to see.
How many chickens long is the rack? Wide? We have to know.

So this is sooo cool. Roof rack is, to me, one of the essentials. Gotta have it. I'm going to be carrying lengths of lumber and pipe 21' long on the regs. It's just that having a SS truck with a steel lumber rack seems counterintuitive, don'tcha know? I know more than a few enterprises are going to offer one version or another, but I'm such a control freak that it's going to have to be perfect, not too big, not too small, and Stainless Steel f'sho.
I'm nervous about this one.

Someone will come up with a standard skeleton rack frame and offer variations to complete it.

Wondering if @SolarWizard runs racks on his fleets or lightnings, and if so if he has any range delta data

because Ct will achieve its max range due to a lower drag coefficient, the addition of a non-thoughtful roof rack may have outsized impact on CT range compared Lightning

ideal CT roof rack would be somehow deployable or able to be collapsed/tucked into envelope when not in use

A few of the trucks have adjustable height yakima racks on them. They seem to have little discernible impact on range by themselves but ladders being up there definitely does impact range. Id estimate that to be 10% but its so infrequent that its hard to say for sure. The yakima racks really exist to better secure odd stuff

these trucks are usually hauling a pallet of panels and associated equipment or towing aero nose box trailers

The 8 mounting points are also good news for those of us carrying longer canoes, kayaks and rowing shells. One of Tesla's few weak points has been the lack of bar separation on their vehicles. The Model 3 is only 28 inches, The Model Y is somewhat better at nearly 36 inches, but that's still paltry. No roof rack need apply on the Model X, an SUV? Most of my friends in the paddling community are reticent to buy Teslas because of this and it's a shame. A decent carbon fiber roof option like Model PD Teslas use would also solve the problem on the Model 3 and Y. I reached out to Model PD about just buying their carbon roof but haven't yet gotten a reply. Kudos for the many mounting points on the Cybertruck, they add greatly to its versatility.

I've never owned a truck so can someone explain how this works? It looks like there are eight depressions in the exoskeleton and the roof rack just sits on top. Does it get secured somehow?

pointed out above are trim caps that one can remove, and thereunder will be a bolting point of some sort - to which accessories/racks can be bolted.

i'd add that there appears to be another 4-6 such trim caps/mounting points in the floor of the bed itself

You lose about 1 mpg per 30 with an aero rack holding nothing, or about 3% of range. The more aero you start with, the bigger a hit this will be, of course.

I always take mine off when I'm not using it.

But it can tow, so, use a motorcycle trailer for roof stuff and bigger trailers for other stuff? At least, that's what my friend who has an X does. It's not a cheap car, and roof racks are a cheap solution.

Those are little plastic covers, and there will be points under them for bolts to screw into the exoskeleton of the vehicle.

I hope they are the same as my S has, then my rack will fit . The nut plate made into the frame is the key. Screw the mount bolts right into the nut plates. This is really adds to more options to carry stuff. Skiis, bikes, luggage.

I wonder if it might be better aero to lift a cargo pod out of the messy air on the 'backpack' of the truck up into the clean air. That's what fins on motorcycles do, for instance, or the wheel pods on the Aptera.

There's going to be some interesting experiments.
