Valid point. I heard someone once describe a Tesla as an “iPad on wheels”
Ha! Yup. Sometimes I get into my M3 and look at all the little fit and finish probs and wonder “why did I get this?”

Then I put it in D and realize “ oh yeah. That’s why!!” as I fly down the road…. ?

This is almost as bad as rust-gate. Maybe there is build to build variation, but mine is about as well sealed as any of the other doors. I'm sure I could get some water past the seals with a pressure washer, and obviously if you open it while it's dripping wet then water will roll off and drip into the bed. But if you don't do that, it's bone dry after a wash down or a heavy rain. Bone dry.

So IPX5 maybe? ?.

I find this test funny. Sure you are testing water, but waterproof has many levels. If it keeps it dry driving through rain, that’s more important. You put an iPhone in front of that spray and it probably breaks. But it’s fine to drop it in the toilet every once in a while.

It's a little sad I will have to tarp valuables stored in the 'vault' from the weather! Le so called vault is only drag spoiler.

It seems obvious to me as someone who has owned pickups with tonneaus that the vault would not be waterproof.

It was never advertised to be waterproof. I can see how some folks who maybe have limited to no experience with pickups with tonneaus could make incorrect assumptions here.

If the vehicle is parked at an angle with the nose up, it may help the situation, but ultimately, no one should be storing items in the vault that cannot get wet or damp.

I find it ironic that a company as revolutionary as Tesla can develop Steer by Wire and 4 wheel steering and Full Self Driving, but cannot seem to keep a “vault” water sealed.
This is likely a more complicated problem than it sounds for a motorized tonneau.

Snow/ice would be tricky. Just the sun alone would roast the weather stripping in short order. They would only be able to warranty such a thing for maybe a year, else service calls would be a nightmare.

It seems like the waterproof-ness of the cover is wildly varying. Putting soft line items into plastic totes is a good idea. For those without a waterproof bed, I'd definitely check the seals along the track with a high intensity LED light to see if there are gaps that can be smoothed out. If not, look around for aftermarket kits. They are your friend to fix known shortcomings. Welcome to the world of trucks, RV's and Powersports!
