Again, I call bullshit. The test was a very basic forward collision avoidance. Automatic Emergency Braking is included with the base vehicle. None of this should be tied to FSD.
That cannot be a valid argument as the Lexus is a custom vehicle that never had LIDAR in production vs an old HW3 version is suspect to begin with. If saying pressing a button to engage FSD which is a production feature on that this Tesla was capable of, is not needed or fair to compare. Then saying bolting on and wiring up 2025 brand new LIDAR system with custom coding to the communicate with the Lexus computer system, which was never on their production vehicle is even more unfair.

Mark has a 2020 Model Y on Old Hardware 3 and it was not in FSD. So testing a Tesla at a handicap against a sponsored Luminar custom configured Lexus vehicle at it's max it not a scientific test at all.

Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota, has been exploring the integration of Luminar’s lidar technology into its vehicles. In 2017, the Toyota Research Institute (TRI) collaborated with Luminar to equip a fleet of self-driving Lexus sedans with Luminar’s lidar sensors for autonomous vehicle testing.

As of now Lexus has not integrated Luminar’s lidar technology into its production vehicles. While Luminar has partnerships with several automakers, including Volvo and Mercedes-Benz, for integrating its lidar systems into production models, there is no official announcement regarding such integration with Lexus vehicles.

Matt was a NASA engineer and he knows the scientific method which must be done to have level playing field of variables. No question a Youtube hit building video and is the first video of his where it is disappointing and highly inaccurate due to sponsorhip leanings.
This !!!!! I mean if your gonna test the very latest several thousand dollar LiDAR Scanner then you should be testing the latest hardware and FSD version on latest cameras to make the test valid. Whether it would or wouldn’t pass the same test is highly subjective and a hypothesis at this point. I really hope he realizes what he’s doing and in turns gets a hold of the latest Tesla engineering and re do the test.
In short I really don’t think Tesla was gonna win hands down and this was really a marketing ploy to send a negative image on Tesla.

the Disney stuff he threw in was for the kids that watch the Tesla and LiDAR was definitely for the adult audience he has. Or should I say had as reading the comments many are no longer subscribing or purchasing his products.
Also jerryrig I forgot his real name immediately went to x to double down on the mark rober test and downplay Tesla even more. Not saying there is the same bed but an orange is an orange.

That could be a valid argument but more importantly a custom vehicle that never had LIDAR in production vs a old HW3 version is suspect to begin with. I had to re-read your comment multiple times, and not sure if I got your point but I suspect you're thinking of it as a "this vehicle performs better than that vehicle", but that wasn't the point of the video. The point was a demonstration of the kind of tricks LIDARs can do, which in parallel highlighted some of the limitations of Tesla's safety features that at this time only rely on the cameras.

People keep bringing up FSD in this thread, but the only thing FSD could have done there was to kick out forcing the driver to take over controls. Cameras were simply unable to see into the wall of fog or into the wall of water, it doesn't matter what software those camera feeds were pumped into, AP or FSD.

Why? Cost. Elon's first principles - fewer parts, use software instead of hardwar (eg no switches). My FSD supervised is brilliant. After the first few FSD cars I had, I never thought it would get this far, expected the edge cases to be too difficult. Now I'm pretty confident it will be there soon.
True.

I reworded that to make make more sense. But to summarize, an old Tesla car not running AI with FSD(that is the only way AI is running on a Tesla) vs a new LIDAR is not a fair comparison. We should be testing the latest of each at their max. Not old to new. We can all agree no scientific method was used on this regardless of details. It's very clear here.

Pretty sure that obstacle was detectable using a $20 "LIDAR" sensor.

I could be wrong here but I’m almost certain, his car was equipped with uss sensors and wasn’t testing Tesla highly engineered FSD. He only has a basic autopilot option on his tesla. For those not intelligent this test is a direct false representation of what Tesla are actually capable of right now. The cameras in his car are just for sentry mode. I could be wrong but I’m almost certain Tesla vision in theory was never used in this test.

there for what him and jerryrig are saying about FSD is false till I see a full blown FSD attemp this test. The entire video was a huge money grab opportunity.

Does the new HW have x-ray vision ? Or maybe AI has telepathy ? If not, then it doesn't matter - AI can't make decisions about the things it can't see.

If his car had ultrasonic sensors, then it's even worse than it looks. Everything else you've added is more BS.

Saying don't test the latest and greatest when you feel you know the outcome is not a scientific method. You don't know if it would see the fake painted wall, water, or the kid. Let's just test with all the latest tech engaged and see to confirm or conflict is all I am saying.

I don't need to pee into the wind to know what the outcome is going to be.

Depends on the strength and direction of the wind, volume of bladder, and velocity of your stream. But none of has anything to do with LIDAR vs FSD and comparing old to new tech, which is what we are discussing.

OMFG! The comparison was between the LIDAR (shoot a laser out, catch a reflection and measure the time to determine distance to a solid) and cameras (capture the light, feed it to software X for processing). No matter what software you give this image to, it won't be able to tell you what's 100ft (arbitrary number) ahead :

Looking at the stock chart, it seems like Luminar stock is going to be delisted.

This viral video might just be their last desperate attempt, don't you think?
A fall from $600 all time high to $5 per share can cause derangement. That might be the reason they are funding this disinformation.

No way to know if the AI FSD would have driven through or stopped. The discussion is not what would happen, but if it is a fair test comparison.

Assuming and not testing is failure regardless. I can’t tell you the result, but I would love to have seen it regardless of the final decision the Tesla made if it that was running HW4 using its AI on FSD.

Apparently I watched the wrong video for this answer. But Mark got the views he wanted from both of us for sure. Good stuff to think about and would love to see Tesla or someone else do extreme testing videos down the road that are good comps.
