So I see many of you in various threads have found awesome uses for your frunk molle panels.
Unfortunately mine aren’t working out so well. Currently I have almost nothing on them and yet, if I open the frunk and leave it that way, it starts to drift down after a couple of minutes and eventually closes.
Attaching a picture of what’s mounted, a tiny camping light, a trash bag and a retractable badge holder amounting to barely 2lbs plus whatever the molle panels weigh.
I’m not really sure why the delay in the closing but that seems to be what is happening.
I’m almost certain if I take this to Tesla they will blame it on the weight from the molle panels and if I take them off before service they will likely say “within spec” since the frunk lid does work with nothing on it.
Roughly how much weight are you able to mount on there? Presumably furthest back is best due to a shorter lever arm?
Have any of you mounted a strut somewhere to cancel out the weight of whatever you’re putting on the panels? Any other suggestions what to do to remedy the problem?

I’d pop the panels off and see if it still slowly closes itself. If it does, take a video of it and add is as “optional media” to a service request just in case your truck decides to behave when you take it in. You know cars love to fix themselves as you pull into a mechanic shop.

Yeah. That makes sense. I’m just curious if this is genuinely abnormal for other people with these panels installed.

What do the rest of you have mounted on the panels?

Did that today and it didn’t happen. My friend suggested it may be heat related.

Seriously though, does this happen to anyone else or is there something faulty with my frunk lid motor?

Id imagine that adding any weight to a pneumatic system is going to naturally cause premature wear.
If I was planning on adding these to my CT, I’d plan on replacing the stock struts with beefier aftermarket struts or just expect to replace the factory ones prematurely.

Yeah. That’s my thought too but I’ve had the panels on for less than a month. Haven’t loaded them with anything really. That’s why I’m asking about other experience.
Anyone know where the “strut” is in these?

Thanks. How would you guys handle this with Tesla? The struts are likely weak if this is isn’t happening to other people with the molle panels but it’s definitely being caused by an aftermarket mod.
if I take the panels off they will say “not reproducible”, if I leave them on they will say “die to aftermarket mod”

They aren't weak. They can open the frunk with quite a bit of extra load. What you are running into is the backdriving force which is tuned to allow people to manually reposition the opening height.

You might try adding springs wrapped around both strut rods to offset the additional load.

Fair point. So how come I’m seeing posts with people putting air compressor tubing and power tools and all sorts of other stuff on these panels without issues ? What’s different about my situation?
Also, what kind of spring are we taking about here ?

Part to part variance, it's likely not a tightly controlled parameter and things like grease distribution could have a large effect.
Maybe a compression spring that you can wind over the rod to increase hold open force?
