Why does Tesla recommend a 40% speed offset?

The reason I didn’t answer yes is because, while you’re correct, this will keep you from speeding it also will go slow enough to be too far BELOW the speed limit which is also a citable offense.

You might be right. I don't normally drive on Chill mode. Maybe standard mode with 0% offset?

Nope. Not in my testing. All settings require you to fiddle with the thumb wheel and pay close attention to what it’s doing speed wise.

I generally use the Standard setting, with 10% offset. That generally means it will track towards the posted limit, sometimes below. I've found that goosing the accelerator almost to the floor (mat it and instantly release), it will decide to head for the offset limit.

It often recognizes speed limit reductions but doesn't actually slow down. That annoys the you know what out of me.

Another annoyance I haven't yet figured out is why sometimes engaging FSD freaks it out and it instantly backs off the accelerator and screen-flashes/ beeps at me. Not great in heavy traffic and I wish I knew what caused it.

If I'm in a 100 kmh zone and it changes to 80, it will typically slow down as it should. But if I go from, say, a 90 zone to a 50 kmh zone (entering a town), it doesn't make much of an effort to slow down promptly. And that's the type of speed change that has a guy holding a radar gun and ticket pad, so I definitely notice the problem... ?

Tested it again yesterday. With 5% offset, the speed limit is 55, the max speed is 75.

My CT won’t even keep the speed limit on FSD with no traffic while in FSD. I called into Tesla and they are looking at it. (No matter what settings I have. (13.2.9)

Hurry mode (douche mode) persistence on L lane passing until 1/10 mile exit is killing me.

I find myself reverting to TACC

can’t use in metropolitan areas
Can’t use on highway as speed is inconsistent and irregular mergings are frustrating
Mountain towns -Difficult in irregular driving situations with unconventional merging, ct attempts merge into motorcyclist on Left turn that changes to 2 lanes.

can only use during steady flow traffic so CT can’t merge freely, even then I need to intervene for exiting.

there has been impressive moments- it mostly got me out of socal to Phoenix, avoiding road debris and road sign construction. I did not plan trip like I usually do.
With the CT FSD I feel more like navigator than driver.

CT needs to drive accordingly to destination input secondary to just reacting to car in front of it IMO

lastly, I wish there were ease to switch from TACC to FSD without having to put vehicle in park.

I keep mine at 10% and increase if needed, sometimes down still on highways as well. Either way it still ignores a number of signs and stays as t 70 (this 77) past a 65, then 55, 45, then 35 over 10.mins into town. Speed adjustment sucks to be honest and can be dangerous. In spots. It never handles slow downs for a merged/narrow lane on smaller road as well with a 15mph limit, just stays at 45 so have to disengage every day.

to leave this at Tesla recommendation has anyone gotten a ticket or a warning due to this offset recommendation?

I think personally it’s way to high of an offset and not wise to use this.

25mph will be 35mph
45mph will be 63mph
55mph will be 77mph (here is where we really start flirting with a potential wreckless driving ticket.

40% offset is allowing the vehicle to be able to potentially get up to those speeds.
For example: In 10mph zones, people easily drive up to 15-20mph which well exceeds the 40% bump.
65mph highways, 40% is 91mph. Now that doesn’t mean the vehicle will try to drive at that speed, but rather will be able to utilize that speed if it needs to for safe traffic flow.

I totally understand where your coming from but I’ve experienced it first hand especially after a highway goes from 60 so doing like 75-80 and then to a 50 mph bridge and the camera picks up the new speed limit but still is hauling and cops like to sit midway of this bridge.

also I’ve had those offsets and I’ve seen the truck litterally push 20 over the posted speed and Thats wreckless if caught.

it will do that if you’re in hurry mode. I’d recommend standard or chill if you do not want the vehicle to speed.
