After owning and driving a CyberTruck for five months. I think a few of their criticisms were a little unfair. I notice the light in the blind spot plus the big red pulsing bar In the camera view for blind spot monitoring. I get they did the review before they got the parking sensor software but noting that is coming should have been mentioned. I like getting rid of the stalks and putting the buttons on the steering wheel. The rear view mirror could have been done better sure. I would have liked to see a video mirror with an extra camera mounted high in case the tailgate was open. That can be fixed with an after market upgrade. Overall not a bad review though.
My father has a truck with the video rear view mirror. It is very disorienting to us. I don't know what it is, but backing a trailer or looking at it for very long makes us woozy. Maybe it's the way Chevy displays it or maybe it's just us, but I don't want to see it on a CT.

The issue is driver / AI receiving backup and rear view guidance whether the tailgate is up or down.

The best solution (which is also retrofittable) would be an assembly that plugs into the same location as the current one, but which has two cameras - one to provide correct vision with tailgate down, the other with it up. (or a single camera that can move between these two viewing angles, but two is simpler IMHO). A small electronics chip that detects are reports angular offset would allow auto detection of which to use. So the cable is unchanged, and only one video feed goes upstream.

This would work quite reliably unless the truck was upside down, or going straight up or straight down. If you choose to stay in your Cybertruck while in the payload bay of the Starship, don't worry. Other video feeds much more interesting will be available.

Note this is a completely separate issue from how the video feed is displayed and whether it is displayed on the main screen or a rear view "mirror".

Don't forget to add a camera washer while you're at it

On my Rivian R1T, there is a rearview camera within the rear bumper just above my license plate and a second camera embedded within the rear rooftop spoiler. This upper camera works great when I needed to have my tailgate down while driving plus it functions as a truck bed camera, keeps an eye on your stuff as part of the Gear Guard security system. :geek:

s true a higher mounted camera has advantages - anyone who has pulled trailers with heavy equipment or machine tools will tell you how important it is to be able to watch those yellow straps. I want to know if they are vibrating and how, because I can tell from that if they are getting loose and / or the load is shifting.

Although I'd note, this is just me - and I can buy a wireless camera that goes back there anywhere, and which transmits to a 7" screen battery powered unit that can be put on the console. It does not do to be limited to the capabilities of the store bought and configured truck.

Regardless, the concept of a better widget to go into the same existing cut out and use the same cable is attractive.

He nails my biggest gripe.... Have the rear camera show ALONG WITH the Turn signal camera.
Yes, yes, yes, yes and another yes. You can turn off the blind spot camera on a turn but I would prefer to stack the two views, together. Game changer.

Hit the camera button and swipe up so that you can see behind you and to either side.

I agree, though, that the software should do as you imply without the need for the driver to do anything but press a turn signal button.

Probably my biggest gripe, where I live it rains more than any other city and the roads are always muddy. My rear view camera is helpful maybe 50% of the time I'm in the vehicle. The only option would be to stop every 1,000 yards and put my flashers on and wipe the camera, which isn't happening.

Also this is the biggest problem with FSD, because camera-only doesn't work where the cameras get covered all the time. Occluded message happens 75%+ of the time I use FSD and speed gets throttled.
