I think the real story is that one of the candidates for the Liberal leadership made a statement that Canada “should” also do this.
Not sure where that rhetoric turned into “Canada plans to…”.
I had the same OMG moment when the truck was first revealed.
But, a few minutes later, during that same reveal event, there was a short video showing a (IIRC) Ford F-150 and a Cybertruck doing a tug of war.
In that moment, seeing that new F-150 at the same time as the Cybertruck, that F-150...
Whatever works best; I figure everyone (that plan/want to hold onto their EV beyond eight years) will end up doing their own research in this area until they are satisfied with being familiar with the overall results that various research organizations have published.

Preface: I am NOT a subject matter expert on this stuff.
I know that my May 2018 build TM3 had sufficient “top end buffer” that I never saw any degradation from the initial 499 km stipulated range until the car was three years old.
There was degradation, naturally, but I couldn’t “see” it...
