My bus took many a ride on a flat bed to a shop in San Diego over a period of a year before it was road ready. I was lucky I had an old school mechanic to work on it.
There is an abundance of VW shops and VW geeks in the LA area. I bet if your buddy calls around he can find someone to take a look at it. The steering box has special fluid in it. Maybe his is dry or needs a refresh. I did that with mine.

Don't know the significant differences between the CT and my wife's 2018 M3 Long Range....but we always keep her vehicle at 80% for daily driving and charge to 100% for a road trip.
