Tesla recently said they are testing Cybertruck vehicles around the world for final certification and validation. I am most certainly reading too much into that quote, but it struck me as a bit odd at the time and perhaps could get your thoughts.

Is there any reason that certification would require testing in many countries, other than if you plan to release it in many countries? I can understand internally wanting to test in winter conditions (New Zealand), but does US certification require that? Also to me ‘many countries’ sounds like more than two. What possible reason would you have for testing in further countries? Unless indeed you wanted to certify internationally.

I am sure it is mostly about winter testing in summer but it is also possible that he has loaded a CT in starship and testing it’s behavior in zero gravity in orbit (around the world).

Yes, that explains being in NZ. But New Zealand is hardly ‘many countries’, or ‘for certification’.

Maybe there was a connection flight and airline had to be certified to land there. Or May be one of the CTs in Texas, crossed the border to Mexico for a few seconds.

we don’t even have official specs and price. I wouldn’t worry too much about embellishments on how well traveled CT is.

Have you been able to reserve one in Finland?

one should probably to take a pretty broad read of ‘certification’

can range from the testing in NZ, which itself in corporate speak would justify “around the world”

to also include things as seemingly minor as photo shoots in exotic locations, with other unique conditions/air qualities

It is probably not about certification in other countries but testing in different environments. We know that they test in high altitudes, severely cold climates, on snow and ice, in the desert, etc.

Tesla just put out a video of Model Y testing in Norway. They could have taken a CT there. A couple months ago they made a video of testing in the middle east for extremely dry / hot conditions. They could take a CT there. I can see Tesla sending Cybertrucks all over the world for different environmental conditions. They have plenty of test vehicles now so it isn't a problem.

Except that they explicitly mentioned certification.

They did say explicitly ‘many countries’ and ‘certification’. As mentioned I am most likely reading too much into it, and they are just using those words for abstract hype. Still, they caught me as interesting phrases to use.

Yes, initially reservations were open globally, and I have one. Currently they are not. They closed them down internationally but it was quite some time after the launch (a year or so after), so it’s unclear how to read that.

If they came out and said openly that international isn’t happening, then of course I could grab my 100 moneys back :) What does give a glimmer of hope is that Tesla generally has not done the regional play and has had all cars available globally once production gets going.

Ford F-150, and the Ford Super Duty trucks, are all assembled in the United States.
The only Ford truck assembled in Mexico is the compact Maverick.

Which full-size pickup trucks are made in Mexico?
All heavy-duty Ram trucks (and Ram vans) are assembled in Saltillo, Mexico. Some Ram 1500 Classics come from the same factory. Some of GM’s half-tons (Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra 1500) are assembled in Silao, Mexico.

Note that not every full-size Silverado/Sierra 1500 truck or every Ram 1500 Classic pickup is assembled in Mexcio, only some. The current, fifth-generation Ram 1500 is assembled in Sterling Heights, Michigan, exclusively. If you order a heavy-duty Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra, you are guaranteed to get a truck assembled in the United States. The 2500 and 3500 come from Flint, Michigan. The 4500 and larger HDs are assembled in the old Navistar plant in Springfield, Ohio.

Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra 1500 Plant locations: Fort Wayne, Indiana/Silao, Mexico

Ram 1500 Classic Plant locations: Warren, Michigan/Saltillo, Mexico

Ram heavy-duty Plant locations: Saltillo, Mexico

It’s a fair point that it may be available in Canada and Mexico even if they don’t sell it in Europe or other countries.

So-called full size trucks are extremely rare here, and grey imports at least in Finland (I did see one Lightning). Pickups in general aren’t common, even as work vehicles (vans are way more popular), never mind the larger ones. Having said that Ford has mentioned the Lightning is coming next year to Europe and I view the Cybertruck as a bit different from anything (like the significant other does not want us to have a pickup truck but would be OK with a Cybertruck).
