On those long open roads, have you tried drafting some other vehicles? You'll increase your mileage. When one passes, you bump up to Hurry or Mad Max, and if your truck turns on the signal to pass, turn it off to stay behind them. I do this with autopilot, and it really increases range. Check it out on the usage graph. Especially helpful in a headwind.

This should be a setting!

Brighton Park, Atlantic City, NJ (Atlantic Ocean) → Tesla Diner, Santa Monica, CA (Pacific Ocean) • ~3,000 miles • Tesla FSD v14.2.2.3

The Background

A few weeks ago, I drove my Cybertruck from Utah to Delaware on 100% FSD for a family emergency — my uncle was terminally ill and we needed to get there fast. 2,187 miles, 9 states, 44 hours. FSD drove the entire way with only 1 disengagement at a toll booth and 0.1 miles of manual parking at the cemetery for the funeral. We made it with 8 minutes to spare.

Full write-up from that trip: First Fully Autonomous Cybertruck Cross-Country Drive

That trip proved FSD could handle anything — mountains, plains, ice, night driving, city traffic, construction zones. So now we're going for the real thing.

The Attempt: True Coast to Coast

Atlantic Ocean → Pacific Ocean. ~3,000 miles. 100% FSD. Fully autonomous.

We departed Brighton Park in Atlantic City, NJ on Feb 18 and are currently on Day 4, pushing west through Iowa toward Nebraska.

📊 Current Stats

Overall FSD % (since v14.2)99.8% — 9,059 / 9,078 miles
FSD Leaderboard Rank#5 (up from #8 at trip start)

All 3 disengagements happened at a single Supercharger lot in New Springfield, OH — FSD got confused by one-way roads and charger positioning in the service plaza at night. On the actual road? Zero. Not one.

🛣 The Route

Atlantic City → Philadelphia → Appalachian tunnels (I-76) → Ohio → Indiana → Iowa → Nebraska → Colorado Rockies → Utah → Nevada → Los Angeles → Santa Monica

We even stopped at the venue where my wife Nichell and I got married 6.5 years ago — Lauxmont Farms in PA. FSD drove us there flawlessly.

🔧 Notable FSD Observations So Far

  • Icy Iowa roads — 22 mph sustained winds, 45+ mph gusts. FSD handled it without a flinch while 15+ cars were spotted slid off the road.
  • 30-point turn in a tight icy alley — Needed laundry detergent at 9 PM in below-freezing temps. FSD navigated a tight alley, did a 30-point turn, and got us back. Zero disengagements.
  • Energy in headwinds — Consumption spiked to 724-762 Wh/mi across Iowa/Indiana plains. Brutal headwinds.
  • Paddle Assist at chargers — Needed at almost every Supercharger to back up far enough for the cable to reach. Not a disengagement, but a consistent observation.
  • Appalachian tunnels — I-76 tunnels handled perfectly.
  • Demo rides — Gave FSD rides to restaurant staff in Ohio. They were blown away.

Note: The livestream is mostly video-only with no audio — it's used as a redundant recording system for full transparency that the drive is truly autonomous. The real documented video with narration, highlights, and all compiled stats will be released as a proper video after we complete the trip.

📡 Live Trip Tracker

We built a real-time tracker with live updates at every stop — stats, route map, leg-by-leg FSD breakdown, energy data, and observations:

💰 Gas vs Electric — Cost Tracker

ComparisonCost
🔋 Our cost (Free Supercharging)$0.00
⚡ Would-be cost @ $0.35/kWh avg~$246
⛽ Gas truck (14 MPG @ $3.10/gal)~$257

Free Supercharging included with Cybertruck until Sept 2026. Even without it, we'd be saving vs gas. And this is with brutal headwinds pushing 700+ Wh/mi.

📊 Leg-by-Leg FSD Breakdown

1771707974705-fc.webp

Every single leg — 100% FSD. The gap (manual miles pre-trip) hasn't budged from 18.6 since we started. Zero road disengagements across 1,221 miles through 6 states.

Green = completed. Gray = upcoming. We're about 40% through the route, heading into Nebraska next.

⚡ Energy Consumption in Headwinds

1771707974722-vu.webp

Iowa and Indiana were brutal — 22 mph sustained winds with 45+ mph gusts. Energy consumption spiked to 724-762 Wh/mi on some legs. For context, normal highway is ~350-400 Wh/mi. The Cybertruck's range takes a serious hit in headwinds, but route planning and Supercharger stops kept us rolling.

Liking the stripes ! I'm guessing those are vinyl wrap?
Hi @BKCYBerwonkanobee

The base is PPF and accent (bronze) is a reflective Vinyl.

@Sirfun that is a great idea. I haven't tried this but heard of it. The problem is the amount of intervention here needed vs the benefit. I enjoyed just using my phone and working while truck figured things out, it got us to chargers and we charged.

Ideally we get bigger batteries, improve aerodynamic options, and like @Fugue set, this would be a great setting
This should be a setting!
Agreed!

Hey, what is a "Paddle assist"? Do you mean "Pedal assist"? Not trying to be an ass. Just wondering if I'm missing something.
Hahaha, dude you caught a typo I was feeding to my AI who is helping me create these records. AI didn't catch it, I didn't catch it. Thanks for catching it. I've fixed it everywhere I found it. It's Pedal Assist. Basically nudging the accelerator a bit while FSD is engaged to get it to back up further than it normally would.

Cool idea. Great execution so far. Looking forward to updates.
Thanks! Thanks for following along, I will compile a polished video with the data once our trip is completed. Will post more updates as well, today we'll reach southern Utah. Almost at the Tesla Diner.

Just watched your video letting someone drive your truck on FSD
One of the better explanations of FSD I have heard and while my confidence level in the system is not as high as yours I think we are less than 3 years out from UFSD.

A great watch
