2024 Ram 1500 EV Will Be Worth The Wait
YESTERDAYBY JAY TRAUGOTT TRUCKS /

First Ford. Now Chevy. Where's Ram?
This was a big week for General Motors. Despite its decision to drop out of the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), GM's online-only reveals were hugely successful, specifically the Chevrolet Silverado EV, due in 2023. Ford also had a big week following the announcement of doubling F-150 Lightning production to meet surging demand. America is ready for fully electric pickup trucks. But what's the status regarding Detroit's third major truck maker and its truck? The Ram 1500 EV, according to Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares remains on schedule to launch in 2024.

Speaking to media at CES in Las Vegas, Tavares is keenly aware of the so-called Truck Wars but doesn't seem too bothered that his crosstown rivals are ahead.

"It's in the making and it's now being, I would say, adjusted every month to improve our specs and our capabilities, taking into consideration what our competitors are doing," he said. Being the last of the three to launch isn't necessarily a bad thing, he pointed out. "It's a fact that we are coming slightly after (the competition), but it's also a fact that we have the opportunity to adjust the competitiveness and the appeal of our own trucks to what they are doing, which is a competitive game, which is a fantastic situation for the consumer because the real winner of this competition is the consumer."

It must also be said that Ram had an excellent 2021, beating Chevy for the second year in a row for the second-place sales slot behind Ford. Ford has been No. 1 for decades and that's highly unlikely to change.

That's why the battle for No. 2 is so critical. With the merger between FCA and the PSA Groupe now fully completed, Tavares isn't wasting any time preparing the world's fourth-largest automaker for an all-electric future. Chrysler, for example, will launch its first BEV (probably a production version of the Airflow concept) in 2025 and will go all-electric in 2028. Other Stellantis brands will follow suit eventually.

Although Ram has additional time to fine-tune the 1500 EV ahead of its reveal, company officials must be aware that a completely redesigned F-150 Lightning will arrive in 2025. It's important to use this time very wisely.

Ram Adjusting 2024 EV Pickup "Every Month" As Rivals Hit Market

Despite the 2024 launch date, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares is not worried about Ram being left behind by competitors.
By: Dan Mihalascu

With the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning going on sale this spring and GMC Hummer EV pickup deliveries already underway (well, sort of), some might say that Stellantis is lagging behind its rivals in the electric pickup truck race.

The Franco-Italo-American automaker’s first all-electric pickup truck, the Ram 1500, is scheduled to arrive in 2024, about a year after GM will have already started shipping its Silverado EV it unveiled yesterday at CES.

Stellantis head honcho Carlos Tavares is not too worried about this, though. The CEO believes that coming out later than rivals gives the carmaker a chance to gauge the capabilities of the other electric pickups and make tweaks.

The company has been sitting back and sitting notes, according to Tavares, who said Wednesday during an online chat with Morgan Stanley that the electric pickup race is fueling the imagination and expertise of Stellantis engineers. The executive added that the electric Ram is being “adjusted every month” to improve its capabilities after taking into consideration what the other companies are doing.

"We are preparing the EV pickup trucks for 2024, and we are doing it by adjusting the specs and adjusting the performance in function of what we see coming up from our competitors. It’s a fact that we are coming slightly after them.
But it's also a fact that we have the opportunity to adjust the competitiveness and the appeal of our own trucks to what they are doing, which is a competitive game, which is a fantastic situation for the consumer because the real winner of this competition is the consumer.”
Carlos Tavares’s remarks are hard to fault, but the fact is companies that manage to bring electric trucks to market early—such as Rivian, Ford, and GM—will have a significant advantage over others in the long run.

Stellantis first confirmed the electric Ram 1500 in July 2021 at the Stellantis EV Day event when it also teased the electric truck that’s supposed to arrive sometime in 2024.

The battery-powered Ram 1500 will be built on the STLA Frame EV body-on-frame platform for E- and F-segment SUVs, pickup trucks, and commercial vehicles. Stellantis says this platform, which will launch in 2024 likely on the electric Ram 1500, will enable a maximum driving range of 500 miles (800 km) from batteries ranging from 159 kWh to 200+ kWh.

Ram's development iterations are a month long. Is that typical for OEMs and how does that compare to Tesla?

A magical mythical product! Let’s all sit on our thumbs and hold our breath for this greatness.

I think it’s great for everyone to get involved with BEVs, and I appreciate the post even if, as always, it comes without a position (I have to say this because I always tell ‘friends’ not to send me links w/o a position).

All of these companies, be they OEM or Startup, who are promising an EV that they aren't currently making, need to stop saying "Worth waiting for". You've all cried wolf WAY too many times to get us to "wait". We're not going to wait. We're going to buy the product that meets our needs, when we need them. If you think your "available in 20XX" is true, you'll need to convince us that it'll be worth swapping to in 20XX. We'll have a Rivian, or CyberTruck, or E*F-150 until your's arrive. I'm not going to wait until 2024 then wait again until 2026 because you had a delay, then wait until 2028 because you didn't line up a battery supply.

Give up that marketing ploy. It ain't working any more.

Well, as Lee Iacocca famously said in the below commercial when he was leading Chrysler " You can lead, follow, or get out of the way".

It looks like Tavares is content to follow with EVs.

I've owned three Ram trucks including the more recent Ram TRX. I've owned several Jeep Wranglers, Grand Cherokees (including Trackhawk) as well as multiple Challengers (including 6 Hellcats).

Without question, the RAM EV will lay waste to Ford and chevy as they have the past few years. Yes, F150 outsells largely to a long time following but does the F150 beat the Ram ome awards time or in customer awards that are unbiased, based on owners mailing in forms voting on happiness of their purchases? No.

I am still in line for my CT and I'm excited but when order opens for the RAM EV... if news hasn't gotten even a little better regarding the CT... it'll be hard not to at very least preorder one.

Tried to attach pix but too large so I'd resize but then... meh, we're not here for ram. Lol

Yeah... I agree to a degree but the ship never sailed. As a past owner of a TRx that sold it back to a dealership after buying it for a 40K profit... I think they did alright sales wise.

FCA def dropped ball on waiting this long but they were merging and that takes time... they waited a long time to enter the last round of muscle car fights and then outsold everyone else. Waiting can work if done right...

Will they take out Elon? LOL no. Maybe other trucks? I can see it.. RAM wins more awards than Chevy or Ford if you check the past ten years... but again, last into the luxury truck segment as well.

Fun to watch, competition makes everyone better, and hopefully a little more affordable?

you're excited about something that is entirely theoretical with no specs......
