From my perspective they are all following Elon Musk, no exceptions.
This reminds me so much of s we hen apple came out with their smart phone. It was so revolutionary and ahead of the competition it was unbelievable. They held the lead and that edge for over a decade and some would argue they still maintain that leading edge.

Chinese e-trucks will be running around long before RAM will even manage a prototype let along a mass produced e-truck.

Yup, the Chinese are serious about becoming world leaders in EVs and they are not play games and "It Matters".

Already Chinese brands started shipping EV trucks to Brazil & parts of Africa in 2021. Electric pickup is supposed to arrive in Mexico this year (2022). For over a year there has been some assembly plants in Mexico for Chinese brand EV models (sedans, SUVs).

There isn’t a ton of worry about Chinese truck imports into the US. Light trucks have a 25% import tariff which essentially crushes any chance of importing truck into the US.

Even with the silly pricing and dealer structures, China would be hard put to compete with that big of a tariff.

Toyota and Honda both build all their trucks in the US. It’s possible some of these Chinese companies might build US factories to build trucks, but that’s at least 3-4 years out if they started now.

More likely: Chinese battery companies dominate the non-Tesla US battery scene cutting deep into profitability of US and Japanese automakers with established brands.

Chinese brands already have some suppliers in Mexico just like U.S. brands (Tesla, Ford, GM, etc).

Chinese brands have some assembly plants in Mexico just like Ford Mustang Mach-e EV is assembled in Mexico.

Why would it take Chinese 3-4 years to roll out vehicles in a U.S. factory when both the Tesla Austin factory and Chinese based factories of various brands start production in well less than two years?

Chinese brands might be able to deliver pickup trucks in U.S. before GM Silverado & RAM and for lower base price.

Not “Vehicles”. Light trucks specifically.

Not North America, in the US. If they don’t build light trucks in the US, they have to pay the 25% import tariff. Unless NAFTA avoids the Chicken Tax entirely.

It would take them 3-4 years to build factories in the US. Maybe they could start up a factory in under 2 years. But they have no branding here in the US. Maybe they should just buy Rivian. Seems like they need help with manufacturing.

Two GM-brand pickups are made outside of the US: the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra. The crew cab and regular cab versions of the Silverado and Sierra 1500 are assembled at GM’s Silao, Mexico plant.

Ok. I guess I stand corrected.

Apparently NAFTA supersedes the Chicken Tax? Huh.

This makes me wonder about the EV incentive and that union clause now.

the EV incentive violates NAFTA.
That’s for the lawyers to decide, but that is definitely a potential problem with it.

It just cracks me up how much they seem to be playing up this idea that GM and Ford are all about US union jobs when GMs most profitable products are made in Mexico.

The EV movement curiously seems to be bringing significant manufacturing back into the US. I suspect because labor is becoming a less significant piece of the cost of vehicles and drive trains/ batteries.

LOL

It wasn’t revolutionary. I was just the first one that anyone aside from a few nerds could tolerate using.

Eh.

Sort of how Tesla wasn’t the first EV, but Tesla was the first which was good enough to be interesting to the general public.

Leaf, Bolt, etc were interesting, but once the EV incentives expired, the Bolt was no longer interesting to people and Nissan just stopped investing in the Leaf (the CEO in prison thing sort of changed their priorities).
