Hello members. The CT body panels will be made of 3mm thick 30X stainless steel which is ROUGHLY 1/8” of inch. For a visual of how thick the Cybertruck SS body panels will be simply stack 2 quarters together. I can see why Tesla says it’s dent resistant.

For real! Even regular steel is hard to dent at 1/8" but yeah the CT is gonna be nuts.

Holy Moly, thanks for putting that into perspective. I'd love to see regular steel next to the CT stainless and even some strength tests tossed in for fun. I'm sure some You Tuber will do that eventually!

I am hoping that Tesla does not change the thickness spec’s for the SS exterior panels between now and when it goes into production. My anal retentive side HATES door dings!

As the Tesla / Spacex recipe for their Stainless Steel is unknown, so is the tensile and Shear Strength unknown.

Estimated Strength of Cybertruck panels are literally about 11 times stronger or more.


Conventional car body panel thickness varies a little, generally from 0.6mm to 0.8mm
(Volvo’s and Mercedes were generally the thicker ones)

If you take 0.7mm as the average.

Austenitic Stainless Steel : 3mm x .5171 kn/mm2. .82736 kn/mm2 for cold rolled.
Carbon Steel : 0.7mm x .3447 kn/mm2

P.S. 3mm thick, metal is referred to as Plate steel, below 3mm its called sheet steel,

Cybertruck is a MONSTER :cool:

Retired Sheet Metal Worker here. You are correct! 3mm is NOT sheet metal.

Hey Mini2nut, love the visual of 3mm. I have been on a search for where 3mm thick came from but can't find it. I have quoted the same figure of 3mm think but then when I went looking for it I can't find it. I thought I saw it or herd it on the original Cybertruck presentation video but I can't find it there. Anyway yes it is nearly 1/8", 3mm = .118" decimal, where as, someone else has pointed out, 1/8" is .125" decimal... It does seem too think and yes, even regular mild steel that is 1/8" will be bullet proof to a 9mm hand gun (I think). But I think I got something wrong here. 3mm is just too thick for all the body panels to be that thick.
