Tesla doesn’t do that kind of thing. They have 2-3 trims and very limited options. As @John said, you buy the tri-motor battery and you’ll get the other tri-motor features for free.

Here's what I'd like: For a $5,000 upgrade, Tesla will install the trimotor battery pack. Since the dual motor setup uses less energy than the tri, this results in a 575 mile range. Done.

The vast bulk of the cost difference between the CT2 and CT3 is battery pack cost. It would be more like “Pay 18,000 to upgrade the battery, get awesome range and worse acceleration than the current dual motor due to weight ”.

This is why Tesla doesn’t do it, more money for worse performance is a tough sell.

On the other hand, maybe the dual-motor battery, by the end of next year, will have better mileage. Not necessarily a sad face situation.

Most of the cost difference between the Dual and the Tri is the battery pack.

That battery pack could be a whole 'nother Dual they could sell.

So why would they give it to you at cost in yet another variant that raises their cost?

Just get the Tri motor.

I have 20,000 reasons why not but my lack of reason agrees with the statement.
You have to decide when the final ranges are available how much range you need and what it is worth to you...like the rest of us. For me, range is king, so I didn't have much thinking to do.

I would bet the price difference between the dual motor pack and the tri motor pack is $10,000 or less. Here is my reasoning.

1. During battery day the expected price per kwh for the cells was between $50 and $60 /kwh. For a 110kwh approximate increase in battery size $6,600 for the cells alone. The casting should cost nearly the same, only the assembly and some electronics.

Of course Tesla was wanting to charge someone $22,000 to install new model S pack, or $16,000 for a model 3 pack so it would probably be closer to $12,000 for the increase in size.

Still I would prefer to get the dual motor with the extended range battery.

I’m pretty sure any the $50-60/ kWh hour batteries are LFP not the nickel based batteries we’re going to see on the Cybertruck. They just don’t have the weight budget to spend on LFP batteries in this truck. If Tesla was able to source nickel batteries for $60/ kWh, they wouldn’t bother with LFP which is heavier.

If there were a $10k dual motor 500 mile option, I’m sure it would be quite popular. I’d be in line for that myself. I just don’t think that’s going to happen.

I agree that's why we are working on ways to be able to afford the tri-motor (the $7500 incentive that just came back will help)
