Interesting post from "The Tesla Space"

Look at the Model 3 Highland and NOT at the CyberTruck as an indicator of Tesla's future

HIGHLAND AND TESLA’S FUTURE - The details are very interesting of course - who doesn’t love to oggle the new features on a car - but it’s what these new features imply about the direction of the company that really catches our imagination. Because while there is a lot of new tech going into the Cybertruck - the Model 3 is a much better indicator of Tesla’s future. Because, let’s face it, Cybertruck is an oddity - and that’s on purpose. Tesla could have produced a pickup truck ages ago if that was their only goal, but they wanted a standout product - so we can’t really be sure that the Cybertruck means anything for the future of Tesla’s vehicles.

Seems legit.

Based on current evidence.

Stainless origami exoskeletons onto standardized EV platforms might possibly become the quickest, cheapest way to construct any road vehicle. Should this be true, Cybertruck could be a prototype rather than an oddity.

If by "oddity" he means the toughest 1/2 ton pickup in mass production since thick-skinned mild steel trucks of 1940s/50s then yeah that would be correct when compared to today's thin-skinned easily dentable painted trucks made by most mass production (ICE) truck makers.

The most transparent attempt at click bait i've ever seen. Brings nothing new or interesting to the discussion, and can be summarized into three words (CT not mass-market). Ok, i mean maybe?

Missing the entire point of this truck: revolutionize manufacturing of EVs. (Giant castings, structural batteries, million mile power train) . Already made its way into the MY, soon will effect highland as well. I hate the media, damn parasites. A "reporter" wakes up one morning with a quota to fill and no good ideas, and we get this bullshit wasting all of our time. Yay.

I initially shared your frustration with the comment, but upon further reflection it is well thought out. The one thing maybe more polarizing than EV's in general or Elon himself is the look and design of the CT. Most people either love it or hate it.

While the CT is not quite a "bet the company" moment. There have been some significant efforts and monies invested in it, not the least of which is TESLA's reputation.

If you say the CT is just an experiment and it proves a tremendous success (as 2 million pre-orders would suggest), then pats on the back all around, we are all geniuses. If you say it is the equivalent of the "second coming" in the truck world and it flops, then that is bad for the company reputation and the stock price. So why not underplay it a little and then crow after it establishes itself as a success. Brilliant!

Underpromise but over deliver is a good strategy for employees, but not CEOs. Thats not what i got from the article though..

I would argue that Cybertruck's commercial success is irrelevant. It has already provided huge value to Tesla, simply by being a technology test bed and pushing Tesla and other suppliers and manufacturers (EX Idra) to new heights.

I think the future of Tesla is found in both the M3 and the CT, as well as the MY, the forthcoming MY, The MS and the MX. Each vehicle has something unique that shows where they are going. And at the same time, they each have something unique that shows an idea that was implemented. Put the best of all of them together, and you get a real good idea of where they are going. The author, making the statement that the CT isn’t an indicator of the future of the company is missing the point, just like everyone else who analyzes Tesla through the filter of the legacy OEMs.

My people know that there is one phrase that had better not be uttered out loud. “We’ve always done it that way.”

Time will tell but the times I have watched that channel I have not been impressed. I do not see the Cybertruck as an "oddity" and that in itself calls the statement into question. I do not see the design of the Cybertruck as intentionally being anything but focused on the functionality of a truck over everything else, with the expressed intention of disrupting the truck market.

I’m sure similar comments were made about the second generation Prius, which turned out to be massively successful to this day. People still call it ugly however, it’s one of the best vehicles ever made.

I agree with the pretense of this article. The release of the Highland Model 3 should be giving us clues into the future of Tesla.
This is not just for the model 3. This is the direction Tesla is going. All models WILL have rear display with controls for the rear passengers. I said this before, think Robotaxi. Rear passengers in a robotaxi need a rear screen with controls. The word is, 50% of all parts are different/new. It seems like a major part of Tesla's reason for changing is to save them on cost of production, thereby increasing margins. This is very tricky to do. Tesla has to shut down production to make major changes like that, which would explain why it's only the Model 3 in China at this time. They have to keep growing production going worldwide WHILE changing all the tooling on a production line. So, this will take a while to change existing production lines.

This article was not much new information and not really taking much of a stab at what the future looks like for Tesla. I see Fremont next in line for a changing to new Model 3 production. Then Tesla will do a piecemeal change of the Model Y, from factory to factory. Giga Berlin has not increased production like everyone was expecting. So possibly they are working on a new line there for Model Y. I also see Tesla changing the Model X and S, to take advantage of better production methods also.

I think we should revisit this topic after CT is fully ramped and the 500-mile version is delivered in production. Even within the organization, the model to quantify the economic impact of CT is way oversimplified. The demand number alone shuts down a lot of voices, not to mention Elon's passion for CT, whatever is left there.

I agree.. most of these articles are BS from teenagers who haven't done anything useful in their lives, believe that apple crap is pinnacle of design, live with 10 roommates in NY studio and whine and bitch about everthing non-apple and hoping to monetize clicks..
btw.. did it mention apple car?
