I think all of us who bought a new plaid and paid $130k to $140k for a new plaid and woke up to the used market selling them for $85k should get a Cybertruck discount. 😀 I was quite surprised how quickly my plaid depreciated. It is a heck of a car and the die-hard Tesla fans are the ones who bought it. Tesla is going to have to help maintain the value of the Cybertruck or it will be a mess and destroy customer support if it drops like a rock in value.

Cybertruck resale values will remain strong until mass production kicks in. The first few thousands units will be prime time for Cybertruck flippers due to supply and demand.

The Rivian R1T experienced this. Resale prices were well north of MSRP for the first six months. Now that production has increased and demand has subsided used R1T trucks are reselling for less than MSRP.

It is unfortunate that Tesla plays these games with pricing in a way that hurts prior purchasers, but it is also a good thing that they reduce prices when they can (I have not seen much of that with other auto makers). It is especially discouraging with such rapid price drops. I would never have considered buying either a Model S or X, let alone Plaid versions, at their previous price points, but I can see where many people might consider them more seriously at their current price points. From my limited experience, those who are willing to spend over $100K on a vehicle will not be terribly put out by the loss in value. Maybe just hold onto the Model S or X longer and the price might go up again and restore the value?

Our 2016 Model S dropped in price a month or so after we bought. I want a CT discount too. /s
Prices go up, prices go down. If you were happy to pay that price (and you must have been or you wouldn't have paid it) when you bought it then all should be good.
If you buy a car from a dealership the same thing happens it's just you may not know about it. Dealer discounts/rebates, negotiating skill, end of month incentives and lending rates all play a part in the final price of the car. Person A pays more than person B and all is good.

Actually EVs are more like a rolling piece of technology than a car. Certain cars because of their uniqueness maintain their value and ultimately become collectable. The most rapid depreciating asset is technology. Technology advances and old technology disappears. The early Teslas have some collectable value, but there are no parts available, so they will eventually just be a piece of art. Yes, cars are a utility, and I doubt anyone truly thinks about them as an investment, but it is worth thinking about their future. I think that there is a market to upgrade Teslas. I am not sure Tesla sees it as a business opportunity, but if the world truly is converting to EV's, then maintaining them will be a market that allows a lower price of entry for more buyers.

It's kinda funny how you're answering yourself here. But I'll give you a thumbs up for sharing ^-^

That's the thing. Tesla was making bank on the cars being scarce. They never needed to. So of course they came down in price.

Time marches on. It gets easier to make technology. Old technology either gets outdated and cheaper or easier to make and cheaper or initial demand finally is sated and it gets cheaper. Either way, it gets cheaper.

CYBERTRUCK 'DEMAND PROBLEM'
NOT.....
The scenario here in Oz, when they finally get DownUnder in or about 2025, is getting your hands on one if you don't have a reservation until say 2026/27/28..... People gonna pay up and over 'sticker'. Second hand, l can see them holding their value or better for a few years to come.

Some want to expect Teslas as an EV to be different when it comes to depreciation, because they're 'more than just a car' in many ways. But if Teslas weren't depreciating, that would actually mean that more recently made Teslas are mostly the same and had nothing new to offer, which we know is not the case as Tesla is innovating and improving continuously. I wouldn't want it any other way.

So you bought it just to sell it. Why would you deserve a discount? Just enjoy it.

s and x sales are so low (100 k units per year combined max), that they have served their purpose to get tesla on the map and are now a rounding error for tesla's earnings. They may hang around due to nostalgia of Elon or stop production and not meaningfully affect tesla's bottom line.

Tesla community when I leased a Model Y during the pandemic: "ROFL you FOOL! EVERYONE knows Teslas hold their resale value like crazy!"

Tesla community when resale values plummet due to Tesla repeatedly slashing 10-20% off prices overnight: "ROFL, you FOOL! everyone knows cars depreciate, and it's totally just like other brands running finance specials".

One of the reasons Toyotas are popular is because they hold their resale value. Vehicles have become insanely expensive and it is not unreasonable to seek out a vehicle that depreciates slowly, nor to become upset when a vehicle experiences sudden massive depreciation that is out of line with historical projections.
