Interestingly, there is a lot of space above the cells. It doesn't appear to be enough for another layer, but it is a curious amount of emptiness. Is it needed for cooling? Could the originally-planned double-stacked pack be achieved with an only slightly taller pack?

The plate above that has ripples in it for structure. It still needs structure as they're assembling it.

There also needs to be expansion space, so that gasses can escape during a collision or failure.

So that is the bottom side of the pack. I'm assuming they left an air gap to prevent cell damage from underbody impacts during off-roading. And that air gap leaves a spot for any water to collect away from the cells IF there is any intrusion at any point.

Could also be some design protection for 4695 cells.

I haven't looked at other teardowns. Is there similar space in the Model Y pack?

I wonder if the battery lines could be adapted for a taller cell with relative ease. That is a lot of dead space. Very encouraging.

I just saw this CT battery pack teardown posted to munro live on twitter: .

The pack clearly has extra room for taller cells. It makes a lot more sense now that Rivian was talking about 4690 cells and I think Samsung has been planning to make 46120 cells. Tesla must have plans to make or acquire taller 46XX cells at some point for the CT! The range extender must be a holdover and suggests to me that Tesla thinks they need to make the range extender because they won't have taller cells anytime soon.

I didn’t think it was the bottom at first but you are right and the proof is in these 2 pics.

I checked the model Y tear down and since that was also a structural pack I assume it was opened from the bottom (no proof) but it doesn’t have NEAR the amount of gap below the cells.
