Dec 17, 2022

South Korean auto parts company Mando Corp. struck a deal to provide its proprietary steer-by-wire system to U.S. electric vehicle startup Canoo, becoming the world’s first company to commercialize the advanced steering technology that would underpin future vehicles. Under the deal, the Korean company will provide its steer-by-wire system over the next five to six years from 2021 to go on 500,000 units of Canoo-made electric cars and autonomous vehicles, according to auto industry sources on Sunday. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed but it is estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

behind the wheel is Canoo's Global Vice President-Customer Journey, Gary Gumushian, while beside him is Andre Smirnov. One of the first things he asks Gary is whether the steer-by-wire system has been certified as road-legal, and the answer is "all done," which is big news.
