Colorado has put a hold on all electric truck registration renewals. This happened early 2025, and I'm not sure if it affects vehicles registered before then, or after.

I never got a renewal notice in the mail. So I didn't notice my registration had expired. I registered in Nov 24, but didn't get my plates until Jan 15. I was thinking that it wouldn't expire until 1 year from getting my plates(I only thought this because I hadn't got my notice, and I was too lazy to look at my plates). Once I noticed I tried to renew online, but said I was ineligible. And there was a note on the bottom of the page saying you can't register too early. So I chauked it up to that. I fillably called and found out that all electric trucks had a holdup on sometime in Jan. State messed up/decided to tax electric trucks differently. I didn't owe anything, but he said most had to pay up to $1600 extra. The lowest he saw was $400. I'm thinking the extra amounts are for trucks that met the CO tax incentive for new electric vehicles.

So heads up, if you're due for a renewal, and live in CO you probably have a hold and won't get a notification, and will still get a late fee. On that note, my renewal was only $1600, which is high, but didn't have the $200 federal fee, only a $60 electric vehicle fee, whichI think is reasonable considering I'm using gas(road tax added).

I'm due in about a month; sounds like this might be interesting.

Thanks for the heads up. We registered and got plates in November, but apparently because of our last name, our registration will be due again the end of this month? It’s crazy - I don’t understand the Colorado system of renewal. I guess I’ll just try and preemptively make sure we get squared away!

Yes the registration goes from the date of purchase not the date of plate issue.

Not in Colorado. Registration is valid for a 12 month period starting from the last day of month the vehicle is registered.

Example: 6/9/2025 purchase; 7/15/2025 registration aka "plate issue", registration expires 7/31/2026 and must be renewed by 8/31/2026 to avoid late fees.

The "plate issued" is what got me. I got a custom plate, so it took them 2 months to get it to me. Still my fault, the expiration for the registration is on the card I got when I registered.
