Last night I spoke with an electrical contractor who has the contract for the cybertruck e-coat anti-corrosive paint on the CT assembly line. This is the paint process that the underbody pieces go through. He told me they are just beginning work and will not be done until March. He didn’t know how the paint was being applied now, but speculated that it was being done more or less by hand now, somewhere else in the giga factory. Regardless of how or where it’s being done now, it does seem to line up with what we are seeing now as a slow ramp for the foundation series. Hopefully we can expect a faster ramp after the paint shop is complete. He did not know if the paint shop was the most limiting factor for production numbers at the current time.

A lot of manual steps in or between processes. You will find rust spots when dissembling parts from the early batches.

why would they hire an outside contractor for anything and why do they need an electrical contractor for a line that applies anti-corrosive paint? Furthermore, if he is an outside contractor I am sure he must sign a whole pile of NDA's.

Tesla is pretty vertically integrated but they do hire outside contractors.

because people mistakenly think Tesla makes everything on their cars

people also mistakenly think we're seeing trucks leave the factory because the entire line is entirely functional using entirely end-goal parts and processes

it's not

that's why it's "a ramp" in the first place

it's not like the line has to just warm up it's enginer block or something

in material part, the ramp up *is* the fact that they are still doing things that are not optimized in any number of ways

If I thought that that kid actually wanted me to explain how an electrolysis process works, or actually explain that Tesla employees are not trained in very rare, very expensive specialty anode placement electrical work I would explain it to him. But I just don’t think that’s the case.

Anyway, if you do want to know you can Google E-coat electrochemical automotive coating. There are just a few outfits that install these systems in the nation.
