We should all show up with our measuring devices :)
Hmmmm.... So I need to show up with a dozen chickens or more, lots of clear tape, feed for the chickens, a chicken coop, extra feed and water... And now digital calipers.

I'm going to need a truck to get this all moved around. But I'm not going to have the truck till after I pick up my CT.

Would someone like to start a mobile measuring business so that I can get all the measurements before signing the final CT pickup documents? That would be way more efficient than each of us having to get a trade-in truck to get all the measuring infrastructure to the CT pickup spot.

Am I the only one who default reads "coop" as co-op like cooperative? Then I see the chicken reference and think those chickens are mighty ambitious.

When you drive a Cybertruck, you don't need to measure ™
Officially changing what I'll write on the tailgate (in grease pencil):

- 0-60 in 2.9 sec
- 500 miles range
- 14,500 towing
- 9.003" d**k

Internal email from Elon Musk on Cybertruck.

Due to the nature of Cybertruck, which is made of bright metal with mostly straight edges, any dimensional variation shows up like a sore thumb.
All parts for this vehicle, whether internal or from suppliers, need to be designed and built to sub 10 micron accuracy.
That means all part dimensions need to be to the third decimal place in millimeters and tolerances need be specified in single digit microns. If LEGO and soda cans, which are very low cost, can do this, so can we.
Precision predicates perfectionism.
Elon

Uhmmm, I rather hear build the Cybertruck to the quality, and tolerances of the Starship or Spacex rockets than refer to Lego and soda cans.

id be satisfied with him just using meaningful measurement units that aren’t nonsensical

but Musk is often imprecise or confused in his choices of terms

If all of the CTs parts were either soda cans or legos this would be an easy command to obey.
@wtibbit you're famous!

" Or, as one of the Cybertruck Owner Club’s forum participants, quipped in response to Musk’s email: “If all of the CTs parts were either soda cans or legos this would be an easy command to obey.”

Tesla's Cybertruck has a serious problem that only a complete redesign (fastcompany.com)

not a recommended read, outside of the shout-out for @wtibbit

If the press quotes any of my ramblings here, it was taken out of context, I swear

Some visual aids to put this in perspective.

10 microns ~ .004" (yes, I'm rounding up, hope I did the math right... my RPN calculator won't even convert to microns).

That is smaller than the smallest bits (.005") I use on the CNC for doing shell inlay on my guitars. See picture below. They are so small, I can only cut at .005" depth per pass. And they are sold in packages of 10 for a reason......

Also shown are my digital calipers set to .004". You pretty much can't see the gap unless you hold it up to the light.

You're certainly not going to notice any panel gaps at that difference.

But thinking about it, I'm pretty sure that internal components are already built to that level of accuracy. They'd have to be (I think?). Think about parts with mating holes for fasteners, etc.

So if he's just talking about body panels, it seems a bit extreme, maybe twice as much as actually needed?

Just to let you know, you are a factor of 10 with that giant .004" gap. A calipers is not accurate enough for that level of precision (typically +/-.001) and you have to start looking at mircometers (the tool).

Having measurement tools to measure to this level at a production scale is non trivial.

Elon does turn the impossible to "merely late" but this sounds more ridiculous that landing rockets or self driving cars.

Sure some dimensions on some parts can be that accurate, but as a blanket statement across the entire product its pure insanity. I bet most parts shrink and expand thermally more than this tolerance. If you know anything about statistical process control, you know this sounds like science fiction.

for days there was a xwitter theme of engineers and precision machinists mocking Musk for having not gotten the nomenclature/math correct

i'm not one, so i wont rehash, but it was a rather convincing discussion that both the language and math Musk invoked was incorrect - and even if corrected, would be an impossible tolerance
