Yes, Japan might lose many of those jobs but most of the jobs do not just immediately vanish into thin air.
The jobs will go to competitors that fulfill demand, Tesla, VW, Chinese automakers like BYD, Nio, Xpeng and more.
If Toyota does not get moving, Tesla might announce the next Gigafactory will be in Japan!

Yeah, well maybe he should have thought about that back when he was telling us that consumers didn't want EV's, there was no demand for them. Part of getting paid millions to run a major corporation is having enough foresight to guide the company profitably, now, and into the future.

He's basically admitting that he was an over-paid failure.

Toyota is lying to customers claiming PHEVs is the solution to reach climate goals because BEVs are too expensive.

But PHEVs are also more expensive and mechanically complex than pure ICE.

By 2024 there will be significant drop in prices for BEVs. Costly & mechanically complex PHEVs will be the first to lose market to pure 100% BEVs.

Oh, and about Toyota's hydrogen cars in U.S., the fuel supply situation is pretty bad in California (population 39.5 million). California is the largest vehicle market in the US, with nearly 15 million registered vehicles on the road.

Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office Fact of the Month #18-01, January 29 2018: There Are 39 Publicly Available Hydrogen Fueling Stations in the United States
As of January 25, 2018, there are 39 publicly available hydrogen stations for fueling fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in the United States—35 in California, 2 in South Carolina, and 2 in the Northeast.
https://www.energy.gov/eere/fuelcel...-publicly-available-hydrogen-fueling-stations

In three years from Jan 2018 to today (45 months) the hydrogen station network in California has only grown by 15 stations. I think just Tesla added more stations than that in California last month.

Way back 8 years ago you could drive coast to coast (west to east) U.S. in a Tesla.
Today in Toyota Mirai hydrogen car (range 300 miles) you can't even drive across California in either direction (north-south or west-east) because there are really no stations except in Los Angeles and San Francisco areas.

Today there are only about fifty hydrogen refueling stations in all of California and about half are out of service.

And if you do have a working hydrogen station it's going to cost you the gasoline equivalent of about $6-7/gallon. Considering there is no easy way to lower the cost (especially of renewable green hydrogen) I don't see this taking off in the next couple of decades at a minimum.

I wonder why Toyota is getting called out for this and not other auto makers?

I'm sure Toyota isn't the only ones lobbying against this. Ford, GM, and Dodge are all trying to tip the scales in favor of lazy enhancements like PHEV as well.

Why isn't anyone talking about boycotting them?

What we really need is a NEW actually affordable BEV's. I have Personally never spent more than 18K on a vehicle. I currently drive a PHEV and it average 75-80 mpg highest average for a tank so far was 105mpg.. thats pretty dang good... This is why its so hard for me to justify the CT until this vehicle completely kicks the bucket and also where the companies are justifying with customers buying a ICE PHEV over a battery electric. When new.. longer range BEV's start popping up for around 25k the demand will be HUGE. I think we are a matter of years away from that moment.

Dear Toyota Motor North America President and Chief Executive Officer, Tetsuo Ogawa (Plano, TX)
We urgently request a meeting with you by September 24th.

.....
We know that your company can do much better – the introduction of the Prius was an important shift forward in the industry, BUT cleaner technologies have left Toyota’s focus on PHEVs and hydrogen vehicles out of pace with what needs to be done to achieve a 100% reduction in GHG emissions from new vehicles in the sector by 2035.

We request a meeting with you to learn how Toyota will stop its negative influence on EV funding in Congress and join the rest of industry, organizations like ours, and everyday Americans in a full-throated call for a more robust federal investment in zero-emission EVs by Congress. Given the timeline for final passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and a reconciliation bill by the end of September/early October, we urgently request a meeting to take place by September 24th. Our hundreds of thousands of supporters have strongly voiced their support of Congress fully funding President Biden’s transportation electrification proposal, and want to hear that Toyota does as well.

We look forward to the discussion, and hope for a more positive direction going forward.

The Electric Viking is very upset about Toyota lobbying against 100% full BEVs.
He says he will donate to groups in U.S.

I donated $50,000+ to the organization most responsible for the state of electric vehicles in the US. They have a very generous donor reward program.

Someone needs to tell the Biden admin about that very generous donor reward program from the one company that has done more to advance us toward a sustainable future. I would hope the Biden admin would be very happy to know it is also the company that makes the the most American of cars made in U.S. and is a capitalist company that works hard to have happy employees without needing to be forced by a union.
