Front Drive unit chirping

all I'm doing is making note of what seems different than expected, so that if something like big red “critical error” or “drive unit disabled” show up on my truck, an issue was noted well in advance. especially given my experience with more than one big issue so far.

There is no need to make a note of sounds you are not accustomed to because the Cybertruck has an 8 year, 150,000 mile powertrain warranty that doesn't require you to do anything special to be covered under it. If it breaks, Tesla will replace it. That said, they designed the powertrain to go at least 500,000 miles, if not a million. You don't even have to change the gear oil because Tesla made it self-filtering to remove any manufacturing debris or early wear as the gears polish into each other and it never gets hot enough to break down. It will literally last the life of the vehicle.

And, yes, the chirping noise is normal gear interaction, when not chirping you may hear a fainter "whir" or "whee", all perfectly normal and all Cybertrucks do it to varying amounts and under certain conditions. If you floor it the chirping will go away, as long as you keep it floored. All you will hear is steady gear whine.

If I was in your position I would send a letter to Tesla requesting arbitration, and start the process for buyback. It doesn't mean you have to follow through with it but it would put you in a better position should you need to.

Yes this is true, and it varies state by state, however with Tesla everything is extremely hard and slow. And there is no repercussions for starting the process early.

Not saying everyone has or will have these issues but its interesting to see that for example, people are posting about the ticking from speakers that i had from delivery that required replacement of the rear body control module, and now the chirping sound that tesla is saying is normal.

my truck wouldnt auto shift, this required a new car computer and touch screen.

they had to replace my steering wheel twice so far, first because the button clusters were loose, the second time because it was rubbing and catching when operated after they replaced it.

this is to not even mention the cosmetic issues on whats supposed to be a “premium” “luxury” truck.

so yeah, i hope this chirping is “normal” and i dont end up with a drive unit failure, and if i do, and its outside of the first year/15,000 miles, i want it noted that i pointed out a problem EARLY. Cuz that would be my luck with this truck.

i REFUSE to let this truck strand me in the middle of nowhere with a 10,000 lb trailer.

All the ones I've been in, including mine, make that noise. Six so far. I also wouldn't consider this to be a luxury truck, despite its cost.

i think the term “luxury” is subjective, for sure. Even a “similarly trimmed” truck is about the same price these days… i guess im just from an era where $100k is a lot for a vehicle, making it almost by definition, luxury based on price alone. Long gone is the era of the $500 truck.

Tesla is definitely not luxury. Maybe get the $400k Bentley or RR or whatever it is SUV if you want luxury

Tesla seems to just replace stuff. It doesn't make sense that a new CPU and screen would be the reason for auto-shift not working.
My local service techs don't seem to be all that knowledgeable either, which is concerning when they have so few models to be experts in.

Yeah, i have no idea why that was the solution but apparently it was. It worked fine after they replaced the computer and touch screen.

I think the techs at the SC’s are still learning the CT and its problems, they made reference to “escalating it to the engineering team”, for which i assume they have for each of the systems within the truck, and this was their solution.

Just so you all know, Tesla ended up buying back my CT for a full refund.

I’m still trying to decide if i want to buy another one… so many have had no issues, but it makes me wonder how many of those are just not bothered by the quality issues.

I know that if i bought another one, i would likely reject delivery if there were any defects… that’s just how my brain works. I can’t not see them. Not when im spending $80,000-100,000

Tesla has it's issues, but it's on overdrive. I notice stuff on Toyota's too, but people are focused only on Tesla
