Today we went to drop some venison off at the Amish processor we use for sausage FSD all the way there did just fine In fact my wife was impressed at stopsign intersections So on the way home I set navigation for home and sat back We got to an intersection and turned right when we should have went straight I didn’t react fast enough to stop the turn so I decided to see where FSD thought we were going It took us four miles north on a scenic winding road along a creek We looked for wildlife and just coasted with FSD Total distance then we passed the road we came in on was 8 miles Out of the way travel because of routing Ya I could have turned around but I wanted to see how far out of the way it was taking us FSD It’s not perfect but I do like it One other time it wanted to pull into my neighbors driveway

Yup normal, I look at the onscreen nav and validate nearly every turn. Some times to take a left it will want to go right and do a U turn several blocks down all to make the left it should have just done in the first place.

FSD took me to the airport the other day, but it missed the exit and indicated the destination was 8 miles further away?!?

When I checked the nav, it seems the target destination for "the airport" was around the back, behind the chemical sheds, though the service entrance, and stopping between the runways :ROFLMAO:

My truck was making a wrong turn (in my opinion). I corrected it and wound up sitting in a traffic jam for almost an hour! Sometimes trust it.

I argue with the Nav all the time, because I always think the way I've always gone is the best way (typical Human). But, more than a few times, the Nav has showed me a way that was better than my own and bypassed me around work zones/restrictions I was not aware of.

It also does some real boneheaded things that are obviously wrong and hasn't seemed to learn from my corrective actions. I chalk it up to bad Nav data and no amount of bug feedback seems to make a difference so far with the recent updates.

I asked Grok how many hands are involved in Tesla Nav, any one of these could inject errors:

From recent sources (as of late 2025/early 2026):
  • Visual map display / base imagery: Primarily Google Maps for most of the world (this handles the tiles, satellite views, and general appearance you see on the screen).
  • Routing engine / navigation logic: Primarily Mapbox (which includes the Valhalla routing engine that Mapbox acquired in 2018; Tesla routes via its servers using this for path calculation, optimized for EVs like Supercharger stops).
    • Additional routing/traffic data: Sources mention TomTom (often via Microsoft's Azure Maps integration) and potentially OpenStreetMap (OSM) elements for certain routing, real-time traffic, speed limits, or specialized features in some regions.
Tesla heavily augments these with its own data (e.g., real-time fleet telemetry for traffic/routing adjustments, Supercharger info) and does not purely rely on any one third-party provider for the full experience. Older sources sometimes reference past providers (e.g., Navigon), but current setups point to the above. In summary, Tesla's Nav software draws from at least 3–4 main external vendors depending on the region and component:
    • Google (global visuals)
    • Mapbox/Valhalla (core routing)
    • TomTom (and/or OSM via Azure Maps for some data)
This multi-vendor setup allows Tesla to customize navigation for EVs while blending strengths from each source. Tesla is also investing in its own mapping efforts (e.g., using fleet data to reduce third-party dependence over time), but as of February 2026, it still incorporates these providers.

Yes, I have experienced the same "out of the way" navigation as well. It seems to occur more often after an update. Interestingly, my trips to the nearby ski resort from home is accurate, but the return trip always takes a detour into a neighborhood and then corrects itself. FSD is great, but one should really recheck the route if in unfamiliar territory.

FSD routes me on different routes between the same beginning and ending points depending upon traffic conditions. If there is an accident ahead, and traffic is backed up, it will route me on a longer (but quicker) route. There are a number of settings you can adjust to modify the preferred routing. Most of the time it will give me two or three alternative routes as soon as I enter the destination. You can select which one you want simply by touching it.

Yes I will understand re-routing around traffic but my re-routing was a right turn instead of going straight to a country highway 55 mph road We went down a two lane country road deep in a creek bed hollow winding road as opposed to 55 mph straight country highway road Clearly a poorer choice to go far out of our way It took us like 4 miles north and and additional 4 miles west to get to the same road that we would have come too if we went straight We turned left and proceeded 4 miles south and passed the road we would have come out on Who knows maybe an Amish manure truck turned over and blocked the road

I am totally disappointed now with FSD after my latest couple of trips and the last update on my CT. Today I went to pick up our venison. I was about 5 miles away from the processor and I was on a country road suppose to to straight for those five miles. I was coming up to an intersection with stop signs on our road. Cross traffic had no stop signs. Now I am about 3.5 miles away from the processor and Big Red pulls up to the stop sign stops and the blinker comes on. Really!!! ??? If I would have let it turned right it would have taken me about 12 miles in a round-about way to get to the processor 3.5 miles away. I disengaged it and went straight. Nothing was obstructing traffic. There was no traffic. I didn't engage with any traffic either way!! So On the way home I am 4 miles from home and in the correct lane. The lane to the right ends in 3/4 of a mile. no real traffic in front of me and no cars beside me but Big Red wants to get into the lane that ends. We are going 65 so it is 30 seconds from ending and FSD kept wanting to go over even thought I took the blinker off. I ended having to disengage. I stopped later at my marina and ran an errand for the commodore. On the way back FSD wanted to pass the entrance to the marina parking lot that it just pulled into 15 minutes earlier. Just a lot of terrible choices on FSD account. I left messages with TESLA and hope this doesn't continue.

It is a mess. Not sure why. Would think mapping to a location and then following would be a simple fix. Most of my local trips routes are the worst. Long distance point A to B on interstates mostly fine.
