Exactly, so it's better to not pull in outside air.
🤦‍♂️ You do you.

For everyone else out there, if you are driving through wildfires, put your truck in 'bioweapon defense' mode.

As long as your windows and doors are not very leaky, this could result in the highest cabin air quality when driving through severe pollution.
Sounds like we need to recreate the red bubble test to find out 😂

A dynamic (driving) test would be better.

But any test representing the principles I was talking about would need to measure more than particulate matter because it was based upon reducing the odor of the smoke, some of that cannot be filtered by the cabin air filter. The Red Bubble test was measuring the ability to filter particulates. In that case you want a high fan speed so you can clean all the air in the bubble ASAP. There is a finite number of particulates in the bubble, a high fan speed will clean the entire bubble.

But that's not a good representation of the real world where the fan will not reduce the outdoor pollution levels. In that case it could be beneficial to filter the air more slowly, to keep the pressure differential on the filter low, so the filter efficiency rises.

Dogfart test is good enough for me. Works pretty well.

Hope that works out for you because it didn't for the OP. 🤷‍♂️

It did. The filtration system worked completely as designed.

We drove through the palisades to pick up our toddler who was evacuated from school mid day yesterday when things were starting to get wild. Had biodefense mode on and it was on full blast. The inside of the car was absolutely unbearable before we were forced to open the doors to get him inside when we picked him up so removing the pressurized cabin wasn’t the issue as it smelled quite a lot before that happened. Obviously far worse when we were forced to temporarily open a door but again, prior to opening the door we had biodefence mode on and the smell of fire was quite uncomfortable.

Can you describe what made it unbearable? Were you coughing, Lungs burning? Eyes stinging/watering?

How were the conditions outside the truck? actually dangerous to the point of injury or death?

If you feel like the truck did not filter out 99.97% of the particulates in the air, then you should follow up with a service appointment to make sure the filter housing is tight. If .03% is what you experienced, then the system did it's job.

I have no way of deciphering to the 10th percentile the particle intake into a car. I can simply describe the condition and how uncomfortable it was, to me and my family. I simply asked what is the best setting to have the car in during a major fire as biodefense mode, at low speeds or even at a standstill, during a fire, made it uncomfortable to us.

We were in the worst fire in US history right when it started to evacuate our son out of the pacific palisades. A short time after we got out we saw on the news people were abandoning their cars and making a run for it. It was bad but at the same time it was an hour and a half after it started. Maybe under 1,000 acres burned at the time. We are now at over 17,000 acres burned.

photos taken at 12:04 and 12:12 on the way towards the fire. Fire started around 10:30am.

Glad you and your family made it through without incident. If other people were abandoning their cars in the roadway, then it sounds like the HEPA system performed very well.

“A short time after we got out we saw on the news people abandoning their cars”. Yes it was a short time later but at the time we were on the way to the school it was not severe. People later abandoned their cars because they were stuck in traffic trying to escape and it was quicker on foot.
