This I like. Glad I also reserved F150.

Next, contact-less curb charging (heard this before being built in Canada but there appears that there's no new development).

Highway Charging

A 1-mile stretch of road is being built in Detroit that can charge electric cars as they drive — if owners install a special receiver

Electreon
  • Electreon Wireless is building a mile-long stretch in Detroit that will charge electric cars as the drive on it.
  • The company said the roadway will be fully functional by 2023 for EVs that install a special receiver.
  • Charging infrastructure poses a major hurdle for electric-vehicle adoption.
A startup is building the first road in the US that will allow modified electric cars to charge as they drive...

There are 4M miles of roads in the US, with highways accounting for 150,000 miles. That's a real expensive infrastructure bill there.

Still, I'm a huge fan of wireless charging. I'm a little disappointed Tesla is not aggressively pursuing this solution.

I wonder how invasive and vehicle-specific that special wireless charging receiver is. Teslas (and I believe most EVs) will not allow charging while driving. So the special receiver likely has to be hooked up to the high voltage cables that run to the charge port and a special controller needs to be connected to the car's communications bus to allow (or trick the system to allow) charging while driving.

Completely a PR stunt. Wireless charging on a 1 MILE stretch. Would not be able to add even .000001% to any battery even if you drive extremely painfully slow at 1 mph, which means you spent an entire hour driving the 1 mile stretch.

I seem to recall I heard this one before when the news came out that Tesla was developing a pure electric vehicle.

Elon's own friend was skeptical that he kissed goodbye to the $50,000 he invested on him for this venture.

Seeing how thin the wireless charger on my iWatch, which probably 1/100th of the thickness as new asphalt overlay, I am not to easily dismiss this as too expensive nor impractical. I'm just happy that someone is bold and creative enough to try.

Again, my preference is contact-less curb charging.

What is the business model here? Is there some sort of meter hooked up to the car where you are charged when you drive your EV on the charger, similar to a toll road?

Seems driving back and forth on a one mile stretch of road to recharge you car is a plan to get Jacked in Detroit- No stops at red lights from 10 mile road to downtown

This article is so broken.

There is no difference between an 'electrical field' and a 'magnetic field'.

And I don't know of a functioning standard for more than 11kw. That's just under 100 miles an hour... for my motorcycle. It's about 35 miles an hour for a Bolt or Tesla.

It could help; they could use the motion of the cars to produce the impulse for the signals which might be more efficiently, but...

It sounds really expensive.

As an example...

It's a mile long. You can get half a mile per minute you're charging, assuming it's like any other wireless charger.

So you go slower. Now say that mile takes two minutes, and you're now taking in more power than you're using to travel that mile.

There is a balance point where it works out. And it's possible that higher power is more possible to moving vehicles.

The bigger question is... is it worth the money?

Well, maybe to taxi or bus services, things which have static loitering or slow climbs or static routes.

And it's probably safer than pantograph wire.

People, let's try and stay focused on ideas that work. Let's keep working on longer range battery tech, faster charging, improving motor tech, etc. Eventually, the tech is going to catch up to the convenience of filling an ICE vehicle, then all these fringes ideas are going to seem bizarre. No one is going to get a discernable benefit from a minute charging, at this point. Isn't it a bit like driving through a cat scanner? Just saying, that's a big electromagnetic field.
