Is this because of less sidewall flex?

Is this because of less sidewall flex?
Basically, yes. All acceleration forces must go through the sidewalls. This includes side forces (cornering or cambered roads) and braking (and every combination of these). Simple geometry and physics means a lower profile sidewall, all else being equal, will have a mechanical advantage.

That translates to more responsive avoidance maneuvers and less likelihood of breaking traction because a lower profile tire's footprint can grip the road more effectively.
