JB Straubel: Transforming the Lithium-ion Battery Supply Chain

JB Straubel, Founder and CEO of Redwood Materials, gave the Conradin von Gugelberg Memorial keynote at Stanford GSB's Climate, Business & Innovation Summit on March 8, 2023.

At Redwood, JB is transforming the lithium-ion battery supply chain by offering large-scale sources of domestic anode and cathode materials produced from recycled batteries, creating a fully closed loop that will drive down the costs and environmental footprint of electric vehicles. Prior to founding Redwood, JB Co-founded Tesla and spent 15 years as Chief Technology Officer.
At Tesla, JB built one of the best engineering teams in the world, and among many topics, led cell design, supply chain and led the first Gigafactory concept through the production ramp of the Model 3. JB had a direct role in both R&D, team building and operational expansion from prototype cars through to mass production and GWh-scale. JB holds a Bachelor of Science in Energy Systems Engineering and a Master of Science in Energy Engineering from Stanford University.

The annual Conradin von Gugelberg Memorial honors a member of the MBA Class of ’87, and was founded by his peers to foster environmental responsibility among business students. The annual Climate, Business and Innovation Summit brings GSB students, alumni, and the wider Stanford community together to explore the challenges and opportunities presented by climate change.

The dragon in the room that no-one has been taliking about is the reliance on Lithium.
China has most of the Lithium in the world or control of it.
This is bad.
Canada has recently reopened its Lithium mines and sending to the US for refinement.
Its expensive despite recent spot call drops on the market. . Its nasty.
Theonly way to beat lithium prices driving up Ev prices and China controlling that lithum market is to NOT USE LITHIUM.
There are several very hope battery chemistries that are in process . Only 2 are close to being manufacturing capable. Its gonna be a bit on those.
SO, in the meantime the smart thing is to REDUCE dependency on lithium.
There are 3 manufacturing in process systems upcoming. All of tehm are proving to be far more energy dense.Recycling is going to be VERY necessary.
All this to distance the Ev market from dreadful influences and keep prices down.

That was a great article!

many nations have lots of lithium.... only a few have had the foresight and intelligence to develop the mining process of which the US is not one of them, being subservient to the oil and gas industry. don't blame China for being smart... blame the US for being dumb.

I am not assigning blame. If a man is dumb enough to hand their enemy the stick that they will be beaten with, he has no basis of complaint.
The US economic involvement with China has been a monstrous mistake since the days of Nixon. ( yes, im that old). China has played its cards very very well.
What I am saying that is that in aspect of being business smart, you ALWAYS should have more than 1 or 2 suppliers for any critically needed material or product.

However, China only cares for China. China is China FIRST.
We need to be as much America first as China is China first or even moreso in business.
I am all for any country preserving its well being and prosperity. The US and world needs to enhance this mindset.

This is the only way that all nations may remain stable and prosper.
