4680 Thermal Design and Management // Why Ribbon Cooling is Better
This video covers the thermal design and management for the 4680, how the tabless electrode helps, and why ribbon cooling is better. A battery pack is only as good as its weakst thermal link.

A good video showing the ohmic heat reduction of the tabless 4680 design, as predicted, because of the shorter electrical pathway through the cell that reduces heat generation. This also gives it a greater power density. (not energy) Also describes the more even tabless heat dissipation which improves cycle life, by avoiding jelly roll hotspot, and why Tesla is still using side cooling rather than end cooling of the cells, due to the increased surface area of the sides.

Now they just need to figure out how to produce the 4680 without production flaws, and at a high speed/volume.

Hopefully by the summer of 2023 the Tesla engineers have it out sussed out and they can really ramp up 4680 batteries production volume.

At the earnings call, they said they tripled the production of 4680 cells.

I think things are going pretty well.

They also said they were producing 1000 packs a week which is a bit more concrete.

Their “Beta” ramp up is bigger than GM and Ford’s current EV production combined. If that’s tripling every quarter (Musk did say exponential growth) then 3,000 packs per week by end of year?
