New CT Owner - Need some input on Pirelli Scorpion ATR tires in snow....

Took delivery today and I love the CT. Had a Model 3 for 4 years, so Tesla isn't new to me. I'll be making a trip out to Denver in January and I'm concerned about the stock tires on the CT. It came with the Pirelli Scoprion ATR tires, which from the little I've been able to find isn't so good. Has anyone had any experience they can share before I head west? Appreciate it.

I have the Pirelli’s on my CT. They are not 3 peak rated and I have the winter set on order - delayed. I’ve been across 2 mountain passes in the snow with them and had no issues (chains in the sub trunk but not used). To travel north in BC and be legal for skiing I need 3 peak rated tires.

We got a few inches just south of Denver. Nothing big, 3-6 inches, enough to be slippery. I think the scorpions did surprisingly well and I’m a winter tire guy on Teslas due to the regen braking and rear wheel bias. Slippery mode was on and it did well.

We got more snow this morning. Cars were all over the road, slipping and sliding. I saw a Ram truck having to be pushed up a hill by a roadside help vehicle. Not one slip, slide nothing in the Cybertruck with the Pirellis and slippery surface mode on. I was previously looking at buying winter tires, I don't think I will now.

I should note, I also drove my Model Y for a short trip with Michelin X-ice snow tires on them...I slipped and slid multiple times.

We got more snow this morning. Cars were all over the road, slipping and sliding. I saw a Ram truck having to be pushed up a hill by a roadside help vehicle. Not one slip, slide nothing in the Cybertruck with the Pirellis and slippery surface mode on. I was previously looking at buying winter tires, I don't think I will now.

Thanks....that is encouraging. I'll get the first taste of snow when we head through Tennessee on Sunday. Not a great deal of experience driving in snow (we rarely get any in central Florida....like almost never!), so we'll see how it goes. I appreciate your information.

How much tread left in the X Ice? And was this a different day/conditions. They should out perform the Pirellis by a wide margin

X-Ice tread is still above the wear bar for snow performance. It was literally minutes after I drove the CT in the same conditions. I've honestly never been impressed with the X-Ice performance in snow. I have Michelin cross climate 2 tires on a model 3 and feel like the performance is the same if not better than the X-ice snow.

Comparing the Y to the Cybertruck seems to be an apples to oranges comparison. The driving dynamics are completely different and slippery surface mode makes a huge difference in my opinion. The dual motor Y is still extremely rear wheel bias AWD and there's no place for me to change it manually. It will correct and supposedly be more 50/50 AWD when it feels the car start to slip, but I don't feel it.

Full disclosure, I was nervous about how the CT would perform in snow, in combination with the pirellis, but so far I've been pleasantly surprised.

I’ve definitely tried that in the past. Doesn’t seem to help the Y much if at all.

I’ve been driving Teslas since 2018, and snow performance has always been my biggest complaint due to the rear wheel bias AWD and regenerative braking. I also drive a significantly sized apparatus for work so I’m pretty familiar with driving dynamics. The CT is the best performing Tesla(even with all season tires) in snow I’ve personally driven.

Very interesting. I’ve had the complete opposite experience. I have found x-ice to be extremely good in icy conditions and I like them as they have a mileage warranty. I think the only area Blizzak or Nokian would beat them would be in deeper snow.

We tried cross climate on our Subaru outback, and were very disappointed on downhill compact snow and ice in a local neighborhood in Tahoe took forever for the car to stop and our Tesla model three w Nokian snow tires stopped in 25% of the distance . we now use those cross climate for the rest of the seasons and put Michelin X ice on the Subaru for winter. i have Blizzak on the cybertruck and had a great experience going to Revelstoke in big white recently. Super solid and planted very difficult to get it to break loose, but I also was not trying that hard

I cannot speak to the model X however a good friend in Tahoe runs it with snow tires and has complained about it compared to his other cars with snow tires. Mostly when the snow is deeper and the electronics get in the way, whereas his Subaru, crosstech and Ford F250 both with snow tires will plow through.
