Tesla is building a new Model Y with blade LFP batteries. The new Model Y will be available at the end of the month (August 21, 2022).
Why Berlin?
and
Why flat LFP?
I guess Tesla Berlin is sort of new production line and not fully ramped up due to battery limitations. So tooling for a flat blade LFP battery is easily incorporated into Berlin production lines. Also, Europe is more prone to accept new technology.
With Tesla going to the 4680 and now flat LFP battery pack, charging and control systems should be the same or very similar to the 4680 .
Nice! Tesla EvCar design with two battery pack formats.
Earlier this year, BYD confirmed that it is about to start supplying Tesla (TSLA) with battery cells. It was presumed that those cells would go to Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai.
Now a new report coming from Sina says that the cells are actually going to Gigafactory Berlin and that the first vehicles with the cells could roll off of the factory within a month (translated from Chinese
Tesla is reportedly going to build Model Y with BYD blade batteries at Gigafactory Berlin | Electrek
Chemistry
BLFP (BYD) QLFP (CATL) and 4680 NCM (Panasonic) are all the same battery chemistry. Lithium (L) Iron (F) Phosphate (P) or LFP with a chemical formula of
Li-Fe-PO4 (phosphate is 1 phosphors atom with 4 oxygen atoms)
Safety
BLFP and QLFP flat batteries maybe a little safer (penetration test) than Tesla's 4680 nickel-cobalt-manganese, or NCM round cell batteries
Future
Who knows we may see a EvTruck with flat LFP batteries!
