PowerShare Gateway Installation – Looking for Solutions, Any one with experience or ideas?

I had my Tesla PowerShare Gateway system installed on January 29, 2025, and while I understand this is a new system, the process has been far more challenging than expected. The installer has been back multiple times, spending hours on the phone with Tesla Engineering, all unpaid labor, and I still don’t have a working system.

The main issue? My gateway was a possibly a rebuilt unit, and unfortunately, no one verified that it was functional. The QR stickers were incorrect, the serial numbers & QR code just inside the door didn’t match the unit when the installer used the TESLA 1 app and the QR codes behind the protective panel, and after days of troubleshooting, Tesla Engineering determined today, February 5, 2025, that the TACO, which is an electronic part of the Tesla Gateway, isn’t working, requiring a full replacement of the entire Tesla Powershare Gateway.

What’s weird is on the TESLA 1 app the installer did a factory reset, appears software is up to date and connected to my WiFi 2.4ghz, and everything is green, and it shows he is connected to the gateway and shows the power from the grid to the gateway and the amounts of power, it also shows the charger connect to the cybertruck.
But TESLA Installer tech support can not see it. Also It does not show on my TESLA app.
One other thing is on the ORANGE BOX above the main cutoff breaker there is a Bright RED steady light, red is never a good indication.

Also double checked the connections from the Charger to the PowerShare all good
Current situation:

Replacement unit is on backorder for at least 2-3 weeks, meaning I’ll likely be without a system for about 2 more months.
Another full-day power outage will be required for installation.
My Tesla-certified electrician has already put in 8-10 hours of unpaid labor and will need 4-8 more hours for the replacement.
I’ve personally spent hours on the phone troubleshooting with Tesla support.
If anyone from Tesla is monitoring this thread, I’d truly appreciate some help:

Expediting the shipping of my replacement unit so I can finally have a functioning system.
Ensuring quality control checks so that the new unit is 100% tested, with correct QR labels and serial numbers before shipping.
Making it right with my Tesla-certified electrician, who has dedicated significant time to troubleshooting this issue.
Recognizing the time I’ve spent working through this issue—maybe there’s something Tesla can do to acknowledge the effort and patience involved.
I still believe in this technology and want it to work, but this has been a tough experience. I’d love to hear from others—has anyone else run into similar issues?

Sounds like a one off. I've never hard of a PowerShare gateway being defective but it's not out of the question. Looks like you have a solution in the works with a replacement unit on the way. Keep in mind that PowerShare is very new and still a work in progress. My PowerShare gateway and universal charger was installed in November and the power backup has not been enabled yet because my system has solar system connected and Tesla has not developed the software to manage the gateway in the presents of solar so, all of the PowerShare installations that have solar systems attached are only able to use the universal charger to charge their Cybertrucks but we are all still waiting for the power backup side of it to be enabled with a software update.

I'm disappointed in their rollout speed on these systems. They need to kick it into high gear so that we can reach mass market already.

You are in much better shape than me (and many others). We have installed systems but Tesla will not turn them on yet because we have solar. Living through storms and power outages when we have installed PowerShare systems that cannot be used is really frustrating.

Any update on this, I see there was an update on these forums the other day allowing solar charging?

I’m in the same boat as everyone else with solar.
Tesla made my installer come back 3 months after he installed it and ran “checks” on the system. Well everything passed of course but again still no system working until they fix the solar update.
As a side note my installer did install a gateway that was DOA. He came back a few days later and did another install of a new unit.
He said he did get paid both days from Tesla. The first the normal install and the second was warranty paid.
So maybe your guy needs to bill Tesla a little more.
But don’t worry you will get a new gateway and then just sit and wait for it to get turned on. Until then get a generator plug and a lockout. I have read people are very happy with that setup except for the every 12 hours needing to reset the truck.

Interestin, where in Florida are you? My project got delayed due to equipment issues; they are waiting on a gateway replacement. Did not tell me the problem.

Do you know if this is also the case with a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)? I believe I am not able to charge my cybertruck or even a battery if I had one directly from my solar. Agreement came with my home when we bought it so I’ve been trying to wrap my head around all of this. Meanwhile, my universal charger and PowerShare have been sitting in the box in my garage for weeks because I’ve been half reluctant to get the install done, and half because electricians, quotes, and overall the entire process is just a confusing drag.

I also am in a similar situation -

PowerShare equipment Gateway3 and universal wall charger installed.

Powering the house via the truck does not work but charging the truck from UWC and Tesla app charging info and kWh from the grid are reflected in Tesla app. Posting a few pics of app and will post pics of gateway3 wiring later.

My installer ran the utility power 200 AMP service directly to the Gateway 3 with a 200 Amp breaker before the Gateway3. He installed a 60 amp breaker to the UWC and two separate 100 amp breakers in the Gateway3. I also have solar run through an Enphase monitoring system on micro inverters that is in one of the 100 amp sub panels. I am on net metering. I was told the house uses supposed to use the solar generated during the day and any extra generated is feed to the grid. Never been able to verify based on the Enphase info compared to electrical bill and meter.

So is this similar setup to those who have posted?

I can see via the Tesla app how much kWh are coming from the grid and also how much is generated from the solar system.

The installer warned me that i should not keep the truck connected to the UWC when not actively charging in case the grid goes down and the system’s solar may back feed to the grid.

So glad to read this. This explains it. I just had powershare installed and it's not showing on my app. I've been trying to get support to figure it out... and now, I finally know that it's my solar panels that are restricting the usage of the powershare. Would have been nice to know this when it was setup.

So just got my PowerShare installed today. During installation the electricians put the solar connection, inside the PowerShare, and it worked for a few mintues(worked as in showed power going to grid) then would error out, and not let them close out the install, due to “negative load on system” called Tesla , they said not available yet, but there is a reporting meter that they are testing that will be available soon. I looked it up, they have install docs and setup docs out already. Once those are out, you’ll be able to use solar while in Backup mode. Don’t know if that will charge the truck, but will at least supplement the truck power to power house.

Also, how long does it take for my truck to activate to get the Backup software?

I was one of the first systems my installer did. He said it’s the most complicated he’s done or even quoted. I not only have the solar but I have a generator backup as well.
I wanted the full house backup not just the 5/6 circuits the gateway allows.
I have been working with him since and he has been getting educated quickly on the limitations of the current system. And now he’s more familiar with the whole process. He told me that not when he comes across someone with solar he informs them ahead of time that the system will not work once installed and they will have to wait until the update.
So at least now he’s informing the new customers and they are not left in the dark (literally) after the install.

From my understanding, A power purchase agreement (PPA) for solar power in California is a contract between a homeowner and a solar company that allows the homeowner to purchase electricity generated by the solar panels. The solar company owns the panels, and the homeowner pays a fixed rate for the electricity. If this is true in your case, I would contact the company that owns your solar panels and ask them how it all works and what your options are in regards to installing powerShare.
I had a DIY solar equipment supplier help me design my solar system, walk me through the permitting and application process with SCE, order all the equipment that I needed for my project and I bought/installed/commissioned my own solar system saving tens of thousands of $. I maxed out my roof with 39 panels that are 360 watts each panel for a total of over 14 kilowatts. The picture below shows 2 of the 5 arrays on my roof.

What the solar installer said about not leaving your truck plugged in the UWC and your solar panels back feeding the grid is not true. Your solar system should have it's own disconnect when it's not receiving power from the grid. Your Enphase micro inverters will not produce energy when they detect that the grid power is off and once your system receives the solar software update from Tesla, your gateway will disconnect you from the grid basically isolating your whole power system (solar panels and powerShare) from the grid. This enable your PowerShare to function as a stand-a-loan micro grid that will power your Enphase micro inverters so that your solar system can help power your house along with the battery in your cybertruck.

Thanks for your input and knowledge about my Enphase solar.

This is my electricians first PowerShare install.

I am paying about $5,300 for the install. It seems overpriced for 2 days of work for 2 men, but I am happy that they full house backup 200 amps through the PowerShare gateway and that they ran the utility lines first to the gateway and made my two breaker like sub panels.

Can anyone comment if Backing up all 200 amps is a no no for the PowerShare installation. I know not to try to run all the heavy 240 appliances, stove, two Tesla chargers, and three split AC units while backing up from the CT.

With my PowerShare installation I can now see via the Tesla app how much electricity is coming from the grid and exactly how many kWh of energy is being used by the house at anytime. My Enphase box works intermittently- on for about three or four weeks then I have to turn it off for 3 to four weeks to get it running. This is the original Enphase box installed in 2012. Per Internet search this model Enphase box craps out in about 5 years, and seems newer boxes are similarly unreliable . About 4 to 5 years ago, As suggested on the internet I tried to heat and reflow some of the solder connections on the box’s electronic board, no help.

Would appreciate if hearing about others experiences with the Enphase controller/reporting boxes.
