If I lived in Illinois, I would get the cheapest plates I qualified for (unless regularly hauling commercial loads). The chances of ever being weighed are next to zero. Even then, I would just pay the fine.

Thanks for the information! So if I want to a Special Plate(Professional Sport-White Sox Plate; which require trucks and vans weighing 8,000 pounds or less). Can I go to DMV and ask them to switch? Thanks.
Yes, if you want a specialty plate on your CT you can get one. However, you are limited to an actual vehicle weight of 8,000 LBS fully loaded (people and property combined). Exceed that and you are subject to a fine if a police officer decides to enforce it.

The IL toll website (https://agency.illinoistollway.com/...K4*MTcyOTc3NjA4MS4xLjEuMTcyOTc3NzkzNi4wLjAuMA..) is vague. I just called them and they confirmed that "C" plates are issued based on weight class by ILSOS and thus qualify as a small commercial truck (2 axles - six tires; single unit truck, buses) and would therefore be charged higher rates.

Anyone driving around Illinois able to confirm this is actually happening?

If this is the case, when my truck is delivered next week, I'll go straight to the DMV and request "B" plates. I drive A LOT on the tollways in IL and rates for "C" plates (if they are in fact charged higher rates) are 4x "B" plate rates during the day. Just another way Illinois screws you...
They charged my Cybertruck as passenger vehicle, but they list it as commercial vehicle on my account.

By your screen name I assume you have or had a GTR. Here is my white GTR and AMS first Alpha, Agent Orange which I painted

Nice! That's my dream car when I was in my 20s. Now Cybertruck is my favorite!

I use the Cybertruck as daily driver, I don't think it will weight over 8000 LBS. My concern is will the DMV deny my request because I have a C plate? Do I need to show the proof of the Cybertruck weight? Thanks!

The IL SOS will give you whatever plate you request. The staff who issue the plate do not require proof of nor do they care. It's up to the entity requesting the plate to ensure they are within compliance based on their equipment, configuration, and usage. It is a complex system which only matters at the time of enforcement.

Just as an example, if a vehicle is in combination with a trailer, the registered weight changes to the power unit's registration plus the trailers registration. So, it is entirely possible to be underweight on power unit registration but overweight on the trailer registration, but still be legal. Perfect example of this is a truck-tractor with an apportioned license plate in combination with a semi-trailer with a semi-trailer plate. An apportioned license plate has 80,0000 lbs while a semi-trailer plate has 0 lbs. When in combination as long as they don't weigh over 80,000 lbs they are good all day on Illinois roadways. If the TT had a "Q" plate, which is 45k to 50k lbs, and the combination (TT+ST) weighed 55k LBS then they would be overweight on registration and subject to a fine during enforcement.

This is really all the a license plate is about in Illinois, the weight of the vehicle on the roadway at any given time with consideration to the wear it causes to the roadway to ensure road construction and maintenance is funded.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I’d add that I just received my plates and they are standard EL plates. At the Tesla dealer, I asked them if I have to get C plates and they said yes, but ended up not getting them in the end. The registration fee shows as $416 on these. I think every Cybertruck I’ve seen in Illinois has had C plates. Anyone else have any updates on this?
