This is most likely not AI.

I don’t even think Ford calls it that. It’s a neat feature. Annoying article.

Pretty sure we’ll get something similar from Tesla.

It is defiantly Ai, how is it not, it is sensor fusion between ultrasonics and Computer vision using Deep learning & object classification & distance monitoring via ultrasonics. I have ordered a CT, this feature is not a buying argument, but it is useful for sure

It’s steering the truck towards a ball. We’ve had things like auto parking for something like a decade. This is marginally more sophisticated than that and I’m pretty sure not even the first generation of auto steer to trailer ball.

it's 1990 vs. the future.

With Air suspension and FSD, I will just ask Zack to go on ahead and hitch up(D035) while I finish my coffee.

A gnat still has some portion of intelligence, if a small one.

We've turned AI into this weird moving target.

Cool feature, not AI.

example of AI (Hollywood style)

I think it’s the reverse.

People are calling more and more things “AI” that are simple compute problems.

Johnny 5 would be an example of AGI (artificial general intelligence)

conversely, as much as the term “AI” has any meaning, the Ford example is included within it. As is Tesla’s FSD. As is ChatGPT.

the field distinguishes between generalized intelligence (Johnny 5) and specialized intelligence - sometimes called “narrow” or “weak” AI

in specialized AI, programmers choose a machine learning model to use, supply the data to the model, and let the computer model train itself to find patterns, make predictions, and execute a specialized action. in this instance, that trained algo is then pared with both a vision sensor and compute, so that the algo is capable of extrapolating it’s “intelligence” to map over never-before seen data, to arrive by deduction at never-before performed decisions.

“Ford collected a large volume of data to develop Pro Trailer Hitch Assist's
machine learning algorithms to detect a broad variety of trailers of varied sizes
and types on different terrain and in various weather conditions.”

that is all “AI” is

put differently:

This is most likely not AI.

Indeed that is the text from media. ford. com plus a little more --

https://media.ford.com/content/ford...-intelligence-to-make-hitching-a-trailer.html
Ford collected a large volume of data to develop Pro Trailer Hitch Assist’s machine learning algorithms to detect a broad variety of trailers of varied sizes and types on different terrain and in various weather conditions.

The system’s ultrasonic reverse parking aid system alerts the driver in case an obstacle is detected during the maneuver.

And future trailer image data can be used to make the system better over time through Ford Power-Up software updates.

The Pro-Trailer Hitch Assist technology was developed in-house, by Ford’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems team. Over development, Ford received 60 patents.

I think you just described a large percentage of interactions on the web and social media. 😜
