Hello, my name is _____ and I also received a ridiculous quote of $6,652 from QMerit's partner electrician - the only option I have in my area - for installing Powershare in my single family home with one 200 amp panel and an existing NEMA 14-50 in my garage.

But I did some homework and some back of the envelope calcs and figured I could get a 50 amp generator inlet with lockout installed for less. As it turns out, a heck of a lot less. The finished price, with an extended run due to my preference to put the inlet closer to my garage door was $1,600. $1,225 for the inlet, lockout and moving a few circuits in the panel and $375 for my choice of inlet locations necessitating a longer run. That's still a $5,000 savings PLUS I still have my $2,500 Tesla Shop voucher - c'mon light bar!

But some of you asked....would it even work? Great question.

The answer is my laymen's solution works perfectly, albeit with some manual intervention - plug cable into truck and wall, press button on Cybertruck screen to feed power and flip two breakers (turn off main, turn on generator inlet) in my panel. This is my Cybertruck powering the house with one A/C running, two refrigerators running, all my lights and outlets, tankless hot water heater, security system, handful of cameras, Internet, and two TV's on. I had to load shed the second AC, the truck can't provide enough startup power for both but I'm sure I could get a soft-start kit if it mattered enough to me. It doesn't. I can pretty much run my entire house, as is, for 1-2 days without unplugging my second fridge or really having to think about anything. If I wanted to be careful, I bet I could squeeze three days with the A/C or even longer without it as nights get cool enough anyway in the summer.

So to answer some questions:
  1. Wait, can you feed a 50 amp generator inlet from the 240v out in the truck bed? You bet!
  2. Can you run your house pretty normally even without Powershare? Signs point to yes.
  3. How long does it take to flip over in the event of an outage? Maybe 3 minutes? I could probably do it in 2 if I needed to. 1 minute might be pushing it.
  4. Is it as seamless as Powershare? Well, no. But I've got another $7,500 so that's worth something.
I can still monitor the power usage in both the truck and app, even without the Tesla charger, so know my remaining charge and draw in near real-time which is super convenient.

Oh, and after the electricians on the job called back in to HQ to tell their manager they were done and the Cybertruck was feeding the house the manager told them it couldn't be done without the Tesla Powershare equipment, yada yada, Qmerit, yada yada yada. They looked up at me quizzically, shrugged and hung up.

We enjoyed a hearty laugh, and I gave them a demo of the Cybertruck as it powered the house.

....and since no one will probably ask, you can still go into off-road mode and extract height while you're feeding power to a house. Go figure.

I did the same thing by plugging it into my generator outlet and just flip on the breakers I want for two panels and the 3rd panel stays connected to let me know when the power is restored.

has anybody tried canceling their shop order and get a refund on the voucher?

My quote from Qmerit was $11,100 and I park right next to my 200 amp panel. I told them to stick it and I had a generator interlock installed for under $1500. I lose a little power and convenience but I gain $2500 in accessories. Heck, I could get a whole house 24kw generator for less. Why would I even consider $11k for a device that it specifically tied to my truck. What if I wreck the truck?

FYI: QMerit puts at least a 20% markup on the quotes.

I totally agree with your choice and I would have made the same with that price difference. However for people that got a reasonable quote the advantages of going with the PowerShare backup offers over using a generator interlock:
  • Slightly higher energy output to the home, 11.5 kW vs 9.6 kW. That might be needed for higher loads like AC.
  • It starts automatically in seconds
  • It turns off automatically when its no longer needed

I'm sitting in the boat of 400 amp service that won't allow powershare. I am waiting for a powerwall that will allow me to use the truck as intended with instant swap. This post has me reconsidering that.

Agree. That's what I meant when I said I lose some power and convenience. I bet my power hasn't been out for 1 hour total in 5 years, so clearly not worth a major expense to me.

You are a legend and a gentleman.

Which power cable did you chose for the connection?

Thanks!

Doing the same install on my panel this week. $200 in parts costs and most of that was for the 15’ cable.

Do you have a link to the cable you got?

Even before I have received my CyberTruck, I have that same setup for my generator that has a 50a output. One thing I did was get an EcoFlow Delta Pro Ultra. If you have the inverter and smart panel, the CyberTruck is just an additional huge battery to supplement the system and you still get auto on and much more if you buy the Smarthome panel 2. But even without the panel, the advantage of using the EvoFlow is that you have full control over it and that same 50A outlet can just as easily be used to plug a generator in and harness every drop of energy into a battery instead of running and wasting gas.
Happy to answer any questions, but this is a very easy project to do.

Only caution is to make sure to install a “male” box like this one: https://a.co/d/4G7Greh
You don’t want a female box which would then make you use a double male cord(very dangerous to have exposed prongs if other end is plugged in). Hope this helps…..you solution is the way to go. This addition simply gets you closer to a PowerShare AND a system that can work without CyberTruck AND is portable.
Still waiting on my VIN from order in May, just got congrats and time to config letter. Hoping to get vin and delivery either in August or September. I’m in GA

I already havr solar panels, off grid inverters and battery back up. I’m going to use the CT exactly this way.

I have a small back up generator to back feed the batteries via the inverter in case of an extended weather outage. The CT will replace the generator.

Thanks for the great info!

Waiting for my VIN for the foundation CB.

Does the Powershare equipment get shipped to you or Qmerit?

Does a Universal wall connector come with the CB or with the Powershare equipment; for home charging the CB?

What happens to the Powershare equipment if you do not use it?
Is that where the $2500 voucher is supposed to come from?

Since I do not have my foundation CB yet, have a lot of questions about the Powershare (like you not going to use it) but had to pay for it.

When and how do I get a wall connector for charging at home?

Can you help? Thanks

For full 11.5kW of Powershare (verify code compliance for your locality):

60A breaker from main panel to GW3V
Internal 60A GW breaker connection to UWC
Internal 60A GW breaker (or pass-through lugs) to generator transfer switch on/feeding main panel
During outage, turn off feed to GW (so it doesn't see its own power generation) and set transfer switch to GW.
