I think he meant "rear doors, hinged" as opposed to falcon-wing? Maybe?

The the CT is getting "suicide doors" it's the first I've heard of it.
Oh it could be a typo. Specifically it was, "The cab on the Tesla Cybertruck features rear-hinged back doors that open up to seating for six."

So maybe it was meant to be "hinged back doors" as you said? Though, yeah, stating they're hinged is sorta odd.

My first thought on reading the quote in the article was that someone used a hyphen instead of a comma. The way text is being pushed out these days there are all sorts of grammar, punctuation, misspellings, etc. So it wouldn't surprise me if it's a typo.

On the other hand, they do contrast the text about the Cybertruck with that of the Rivian so just the fact that they made a point of mentioning it might indicate that it is intentional. But if it's intentional, this is the first I've heard of suicide doors being in the design. I like the idea of suicide doors but if they are implemented like typical modern suicide doors where you have to open the front door first before the back door will open, I'm not so keen on the idea.

I'll be curious to see how this pans out.

I don't understand the idea of rear-hinged doors, and it's not on the prototype so I doubt we'll see it on the finished product.

On the Dodge Ram "quad cab" (not to be confused with the full length crew cab), it was a way to get you more opening on the back door (you could put the front seat forward as well), and allowed access to the back seat with what was pretty much a half length door opening.

On the CT, the doors are normal length, so not needed, and I'm guessing would make that exoskeleton much weaker compared to having a B-column.

I doubt kbb has any actual info. Likely just supposition based off of that shot.

Either I've missed a big announcement, this journalist is just wrong, or kbb accidentally leaked something! This article mentions that Cybertruck rear doors will be rear hinged.

Thoughts?

I really F'n hope not. This is one of my pet peeves about my F150. It's horrible. Look at were the driver's seat belt is. It's on the back door. Stop to let a passenger out and you, as the driver, have to unbuckle your seatbelt and open your own door before the rear door will open. Want to put groceries in the back seat, you just have to push the cart to the front of the truck, open your door, open the back door, close the front door, pull the cart back...it's stupid. This is of course if someone is parked next to you. If nobody is next to you it's not as much of an issue. The concept works a little better if the rear door opens 180 degree flat against the back panel, or something close to that, but the Ford rear doors do not do this. HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT. I will not buy another truck built like this.

Barn Doors! Meh…I don’t care which Tesla chooses. CT design will support both choices.

I like barn doors on the rear of my Tahoe. Few times I access the back, NBD.

Fair point. I've never owned a vehicle with a rear hinged door. After that explanation, I'm not sure I'm a fan of it either.

BUT it buys 3% shrink longitudinally to eliminate a redundant B-pillar.

The article says: "the Tesla is less about work and more about making a statement." if you believe that then you can believe a lot of things that they say, one of them being about the "rear-hinged" doors. Me, I say they are full of shit, partly because, to me, the CT is perhaps the most work-worthy vehicle ever built, and I don't trust anything that comes after that statement.
