Think about the fact that the trailer weighing 16500 lbs. is greater than and pushing the unit powering it thar only weighs 6000 lbs. A 10000 lbs difference is impossible for the power unit to control unless the trailer also is powered and under the control of the power unit towing it.

Barring that happening, little 6000 lb CT just gets push around curves, through red lights and over baby buggies that happen to suddenly appear.

16500 lbs is a three car hauler trailer. I’ve towed one of those. It destroyed a F350 1 ton dually grinding the axel bearing into the spindles and vaporizing brake pads like they were made of cork. Yes it could pull 16500 lbs. No it could not do it repeatedly. That took an International 1850 series tractor(3.5 ton) and a real 5th wheel to handle the lateral loads.
I think you hit the nail on the head here. It isn't so much "can it pull it", but more "can it stop it, turn with it?", etc. I'm planning on buying the tri-motor CT, but more because I want more passive motor resistance. In fact, I'm certain the single motor CT can get 14k lbs rolling, but you'll need the additional resistance that comes from the regenerative braking to really stop the thing without completely shredding your brakes on your first down-hill switch backs. A big, heavy engine also helps in ICE vehicles when down shifting, same idea I think.

My guess is that the regenerative braking is going to be adjustable in the CT to manage towing loads correctly.

Spreading out the load also reduces tire friction which can make it more likely for the rubber to come unstuck from the road.

Wide vs narrow comes with different trade-offs. If you're on pavement, or a hard surface, narrow (to a point) gives you more bite than wide. This is even more true if there's soft stuff atop the hard surface (like snow or mud on a roadway). Of course if you're trying to not sink into a soft surface like mud or snow over grass, well, wider is better. Just don't try to go fast.

I'm pretty sure when there's a million Cybertrucks on the road, finding tires won't be a problem. It's not like the olden days when you wouldn't be able to find a tire that exceeds your needs because of crappy materials.

Tow ratings are supposed to meet SAE J2807 industry standards tests for handling , control, stopping & parking.

Ford pickup truck 6,050 lbs SRW (single rear wheels, NON dually) truck towing trailer 16,500lb to even 18,200 lbs. passed.

Looks like it might be possible for Tesla to engineer 6,000-6,500lbs tri-motor Cybertruck to be capable of towing a 16,500 trailer.

Maybe the Ford F-350 dually you had was a lemon?

It sounds like Dodge is on the right track with their super duty line up of plug in hybrids. If people insist pulling 16000 lbs. as a must have and then use that same truck as a grocery getter/commuter half the time, then at least the first ~60 miles per day can be BEV. This would help with urban pollution and if half of their vehicle 250,000 miles are BEV it is still a win for planet as compared to today's heavy duty truck.

Unless the 16k club figures out a powered trailer or additional batteries on board they are going to be disappointed even in the CT3.

just upgraded my toy hauler to a new one (Carbon 35) - same weight as the old one at 13k full load...my current 2500 pulls it just fine (bumper pull, not 5th wheel) - expecting / hoping the CT3 will pull it just fine (it's under both max tow weight and assume tongue weight based upon payload rating), granted with a big hit on range....

I don't think Tesla is designing the Cybertruck with long distance towing in mind. It will be able to tow like a beast... but range is going to suffer a lot. So if you want to haul a trailer of dirt or rocks across town, you are going to be super happy. If you are expecting to be able to haul a 13,000 pound brick shaped toy hauler 200 miles to the mountains and back, you are likely going to be disappointed.

A few people have towed with their Model X, and while it's done fine, range suffers a lot.

OK, the wheels will turn.
But how about the rest of " lots of other great things "?

Then why put a picture of the CT towing a brick shaped, 2 axle, and what appears to be stainless steel trailer on the website?

I'm hoping he means it'll have door handles that work.

I have heard something about even more range on the air suspension which would be quite crazy.

I suspect the ability to reverse the flow on the home charger is something which can be enabled in software and since Tesla is sniping other makers idea, they might steal the home power back up feature.

There have been hints about a cabin/ vault passthrough and climate control in the vault.

It'll tow the trailer just fine.

Range is based on efficiency. The truck is shaped to maximize efficiency.

People who have towed smaller trailers with the Model X and it's worked fine... but range is cut by about 50%. If the trailer is much less aero than the truck and triples the total weight, it's going to have a massive impact on range. Maybe more than halving it. There is a good chance I'll get a small camper to tow behind the

I shouldn't have said Tesla didn't design it for long range, physics is stacked against you, not the Tesla designers.

Good point. Maybe Tesla is planning to provide/support integration of trailer batteries.

The Model X also doesn't displace much for a trailer to hide in, so a Cybertruck will have a different towing loss.

But many trailers are very inefficient to pull.

I wonder if someone is going to sell a fairing for towing with a cybertruck. I've seen them on pickups or even roof racks. Might make sense.

My Dad had a fairing mounted on the headache rack for his rv. made huge difference in mileage. They called it a wing.

TeslaTrlr shows smooth surface-skin form. IDK but who has access to wind tunnel model testing? Tesla. It looked at 2019 launch like an after thought show piece IMO it was a design in search of a purpose. Maybe Tesla ran the wind tunnel tests?
