Tesla acquires $5 million worth of land outside Austin to build new factory

Tesla is acquiring $5 million worth of land outside of Austin, Texas to build its new factory as it is about to secure over $60 million in incentives for the project.

Last month, Electrek exclusively reported that Tesla’s next factory is going to be in Austin.

After our report, Tesla leaked that Tulsa, Oklahoma, was still in the running, but we were able to confirm that Tesla was already set to build in Austin, and it plans to move fast with hope to have a general assembly line for Model Y in Texas by the end of the year.

Now we’ve learned that Tesla is buying a 2,100-acre piece of land (pictured above) just outside Austin to build the factory.

The land is currently occupied by a sand and gravel mining site, but Tesla is buying the location for just over $5 million which was revealed in an application with the Texas Comptroller’s office.

Tesla describes the project in the application:

“Tesla is evaluating the possible development, design, and construction of an electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Travis County within the Austin Green property. This site is approximately 2,100 acres and located at the intersections of SH-130 and Harold Green Road. The property is currently a sand and gravel mining site owned and operated by Martin Marietta and Texas construction projects. The Martin Marietta assets will operate for a period of time but will be relocated in the future to allow for buildout of the site. The timeline for the relocation will be determined at a later date.”
Electrek has learned that they have already started that process of relocation and Tesla’s construction team is already getting ready to build on at this location, which is near the Austin airport.

The construction of the new Tesla factory is set to commence in Q3 of 2020 pending all approvals.

Tesla is seeking approval from the local school district to forgive up to $68 million on its property tax bill over 10 years.

Looks like the Cybertruck Gigafactory is coming to Texas!

Tesla’s next factory is going to be in Austin, Texas and it’s going to happen quickly

May. 15th 2020 2:55 pm ET

A source familiar with the matter told Electrek that Tesla has chosen Austin, Texas for its next factory and it’s going to happen quickly.

he race to secure Tesla’s next factory is apparently over.

According to a reliable source familiar with the matter, Tesla CEO Elon Musk is set on bringing the next Tesla Gigafactory, or now Terafactory, to Austin, Texas, or at least close to the city.

The people familiar with the project said that Musk has tasked the engineering team working at Gigafactory Nevada to start the process for the new factory, which is expected to make the Tesla Cybertruck electric pickup truck and the Model Y.

Tesla’s CEO also reportedly wants to move extremely fast.

We are told that the decision for the site is not set in stone since Tesla was apparently given a few options in the greater Austin area, but Musk is said to want to start construction extremely soon and aims to have Model Y vehicles coming out of the plant by the end of the year.

It would be an even more aggressive timeline than Gigafactory Shanghai.

However, we are told that Tesla would aim to only have a general assembly line ready on that timeline and it would keep building the factory around the first phase in order to increase production capacity of different parts next year.

By late next year, the new Texas factory would be producing Tesla’s new Cybertruck electric pickup.

Tesla already has some connections to Austin, Texas.

When Tesla started building a team of chip engineers for its Autopilot hardware 3.0, it hired several engineers from AMD’s corporate offices in Austin and Tesla decided to open an office there for its Autopilot hardware engineers.

Recently, Musk has been talking about moving Tesla’s California operations to Nevada and/or Texas due to the automaker’s difficulties working with the local government to reopen the Fremont factory, where it currently produces most of its vehicles.

This project is not directly related to that announcement.

We are talking here about Tesla’s previously announced plans to build a ‘Cybertruck Gigafactory’ in “central US”.

Electrek’s Take

I think most people won’t be surprised by the news. Elon seems to have been leaning toward Texas for a while now.

But the timeline was really surprising to me.

This source has been really reliable in the past and they seem adamant that Tesla is pushing to have cars coming out of the factory by December, which just sounds crazy.

Although we are talking about just general assembly here so it’s not like Gigafactory Shanghai, which was built on a quick timeline too, though not as aggressive as this.

Tesla had Gigafactory Shanghai producing cars within a year after starting construction, but it was also producing the body of the vehicles and for now, it sounds like the bodies of the Model Y vehicles coming out of the new Texas factory would be produced in Fremont.

Therefore, I don’t think it’s impossible, but like it’s often the case with Tesla, the timeline is extremely aggressive.

Assuming this is done in real time and not Tesla time and assuming groundbreaking in June, that means 6 months to model Y and if I were being optimistic then another 6 months to Cybertruck.

They'll need to road test for a few months, but maybe we'll see consumer CTs mid to late 2021, as planned.

I see them simply tweaking an existing blueprint from Giga- to Tera-. Order the same materials as with the previous -factories (to scale), bolt down the robots and start churning the stuff out.

since I’m roughly 40K in line, I’m moving my delivery expectation from q3 2022 to q2 2022 ?

Wow, awesome news. Now all that remains is Texas to allow Tesla cars to be sold directly in state. I guess that change will happen slowly when politicians eventually realize that the oil mafia and stealerships do not have that much power after all. I'm really impressed with the timeline. C'mon, show the Chinese how it's done.

Elon time is strange. Many times its years later but other times its super aggressive to the point of seemingly comical, but Elon pulls it off somehow.

Depending on the type of structure 6months is plenty of time. If Tesla has already worked out the drawings and the local jurisdiction expedites the permitting process.

I don’t see why they shouldn’t be able to Have a Smaller building for general assembly cranking out Y’s in December.

I was super excited to read that Mr. Musk has accelerated the timeline for the CT. I would love to see transport trucks rolling away from the assembly plant loaded with fresh Cybertruck‘s in Q3 of 2021. This vehicle will be a disruptor in the full size pickup truck market. It’s the future that you can buy today.

Does tHis imply that Texas relented and will allow Tesla to sell cars in Texas?
