There have been plenty of threads on about how the vault cover should/could work and what the risks are. Tesla obviously has the potential to make a robust design but to me this confirms that it is a very difficult problem to solve. It is a sample size of one to be sure, but worth noting.

Anyone else not surprised that this failed?

I would think they would have a solution for this because the problem in so obvious. Regarding debris and snow I would think like a chute through to the bottom of vehicle would allow the debris to just fall through as it rolls up along with a sweeper right at the top end to keep larger items out. One thing I've learned from my MYP ownership they have really good engineering of components.

I still think a solid glass bed cover with integrated solar, that slides up over the rear roof would work the best.

Though I doubt they will do this, I agree that a single piece could be a more robust approach. That presents some other challenges and would probably have more impact to range (aero) when open, but maybe not significantly?

Tesla Cybertruck Roll up vault cover- concerns that Rivian's already failed? 21qbk9njfp171

From Tesla's patent application, the vault cover will have a long vertical drop before being coiled, allowing for dirt and debris to fall away.

It seems like it will be difficult to keep clean (already envisioning the "cover for the cover" lol) but with metal construction it will be quite sturdy and jam-resistant.

Plus you can stand on it lol

Hey, look Rivian in test towing, the driver didn't want to make a full stop..
Just observation. Driver error. Wonder if a warning came up for driver about the Stop Sign?

Competition is on its Honeymoon, but reality is coming.

Once people have the CT to compare to , there will be no competition.

Software glitches like we see in this Vid will be common to the point of ridicule compared to Tesla's.

What we just see is the beginning of far superior inferiority. Lol

I had a thought about the tonneau cover

Given we can stand on it, which is not really relevant for what I'm about to say,.,. But it does indicate strength…I wonder if our brilliant engineers have designed something to grind debris down like a coffee grinder. I'm serious.
