Stolen Tesla Model S Leads Police On Wild Pursuit

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA) — A suspect behind the wheel of a stolen Tesla led authorities on a bizarre, high-speed pursuit Tuesday night before being captured in Newport Beach.
The pursuit began a little after 10 p.m. when Hawthorne police spotted a Tesla Model S which had been reported stolen.

The pursuit wound its way onto the eastbound 91 Freeway in Carson, then to the southbound 405 Freeway near Fountain Valley, the suspect hitting speeds above 100 miles per hour.

At one point, one of the Hawthorne police vehicles tailing the suspect was involved in a collision.


California Highway Patrol eventually took over the pursuit, which came to abrupt stop in the middle of the southbound State Route 73 Freeway, just south of Bonita Canyon Drive, in Newport Beach.

Following a standoff, in which the suspect got out of the Tesla several times, and appeared to put clothes on the roof of the car, he then started to drive again. At that point, CHP officers used a PIT maneuver to bring the car to a final stop. The driver was taken into custody at about 11:10 p.m.

I am more curious on how the Tesla was stolen over how he was stopped.

Not enough info, just enough to FUD Tesla. If it was an older one they are easier to get access. So that's why Tesla implemented PIN to drive for all cars except the original Roadster. When more details come out, then we will get a bigger picture. But, in general, some areas they are highly targeted for quick payout.

I'm wondering if they could program a stolen mode for owners to safely shut down the vehicle in app. Mark it stolen on your phone app and if the car is in motion on a public street, auto pilot takes over, disables user controls and wheel, and safely pulls into break down lane or nearest parking lot and turns off. Maybe even flashes lights and announces over pa. This car is being stolen while also notifying the police of it's location.

I have often wondered why ATMs are not built with a similar capability. Picture this, a crook backs up to an ATM and hooks a chain onto it and pulls it off its mounting and loads it into his truck. As soon as the ATM starts to move it calls 911 and reports something like "this is the ATM at the corner of 144th and Main. I am being stolen and am now heading north on 144th at 55 MPH. I am forwarding the security camera footage which will help you identify the vehicle."

I want remote FSD takeover. Not because I think the CT will be stolen. I want to remote return the truck when son borrows without asking.

Seriously, my friend. My advice to you is devote a reasonable chunk of your life obsessing to find out "why" and see if YOU can be the one to make it happen.

This is coming from someone who asked a certain corporation's lead software engineer a "why don't you" question on the first day of a 4-day industry conference. I obsessed over the crappy answer all night, then left the conference the following day on the first flight home to go talk to a patent attorney. It took four years and was a "dog catches car and wins" moment.

Try over 70 vehicles! Nothing beats stealing $2.7 million dollars worth of brand new vehicles from CA new car dealership last year. It was during the George Floyd riots and local law enforcement was simply overwhelmed.

My big question is... why give high speed chase when you could just follow the gps pings and block the highways to kettle it?

Nothing beats stealing 70 brand new vehicles from new car dealership last year. It was during the George Floyd riots and local law enforcement was simply overwhelmed.

This is what happens when the police focus on the protest and not the rest of the city. Police weren't 'overwhelmed' - they just didn't respond in some sections of the city. It's a direct result of the police tactics.

Other cities, the police spreads out along the protest and a few blocks back so that they can catch things like this before they happen. By putting traffic control and barricade liability to the protest organizers, to working with the parade, the messages can be made in the public square without damage to the city.

But in cities that use shield-wall and aggressive blanket arrest tactics you get this instead.

Only after releasing the knockout gas, wouldn’t want them getting away.

I agree, why didn't the police let the would be thief think he got away. And follow the GPS of the Tesla to his place (where he takes stolen vehicles to). BTW, wouldn't the Tesla have sentry cam footage to identify the thief? Why get into a high speed chase when you can use it as an opportunity.
