** Remember this cell is not directly from a production Tesla Model Y with 4680 like what will be found in Munro Live videos.
This "The Limiting Factor " cell was make at least 6 months ago at Tesla Kato Road factory so it probably much older than Munro Live videos.

So for the TL/DW crowd: Energy density is comparable to shipping 2170s. These cells are older chemistry which contains cobalt and no silicon.

New generation cells should be 10-20 more energy dense. Those next Gen cells are likely what goes into CT.

The 4680 was never about density at the cell level, but about it at the pack and factory level:

If your robot can weld 60 cells a minute, you want these cells as big as possible so that robot can do more kWh of packs per hour.

If your pack can be simpler and cells more structural, your pack can weigh less and pack more kWh of batteries.

If I remember correctly energy density was supposed to be part of the equation. However this is still good news on the overall system, and cost viewpoint.

It is a structural battery pack so energy density at pack and total vehicle level is what is utmost important not the Wh/kg of standalone single cells.

Having a particular 300 Wh/kg battery cell chemistry & design might not be real useful if 50 KWh of standalone cells also needed 500 kg of cooling/heating system or extra structure to compress it like many prismatic/pouch cells require.

Yep. The bulk of the weight savings described on battery day was from vehicle integration. Increasing cell density is important as well, but I seem to recall it was a 16% weight reduction and about 4% of that was due to improved energy density.

As I understand it… One of the major benefits of the 4680 form factor was the ability build a battery manufacturing line with a relatively low capital expense and foot print. This would facilitate extreme mass production of batteries.

The CT and Semi are going to need a boat load of Batteries.

Jordan has a tweet which speaks directly to the point @firsttruck makes above.

The can reduces energy density of the cell, but serves a purpose other than just holding the goo inside the battery.

The 2170 cells require the pack carry their weight and require a separate floor to support the seats/ carpet/ etc. The 4680s supports their own weight, eliminate the weight of the floor, and support the seats. The cans are effectively negative mass.

Was this not explained during Battery Day? It was quite boring. Just get the batteries in the vehicles, lol.
