I will respectfully disagree with you on this. An in-depth study of the history of the constitution shows the split between the authors of the constitution, and some of the states on the issue of slavery. The constitution was desired by the founders to be anti-slavery, but they feared some states wouldn’t ratify, so they just threw in hints of their intent. The final document was a compromise to get all the states to ratify. The founding fathers weren’t interested in the degradation of women. It was a view held by almost all that different genders had different roles in the world. This was taught in large part by the Catholic Church, and adopted by the Church of England when they split. Many religions today still hold that view.

There are many things in our past for which we cannot be proud. But the core intent of the founding of the country has far more good to it than bad. And the founding fathers cannot and should not be judged based on today’s principles. Nor should we today be judged based on yesterday’s or tomorrow’s principles. Just in the same way we don’t criticize doctors 250 years ago for not believing what we do today. And 250 years from now, they will look back on our beliefs the same way.

I agree whole heartedly with Pete. You had to get 13 states to come to an agreement. One of the big sticking points was slavery. If they tried for that they would have never come to an agreement. You are foolish if you think we were founded in slavery.

This seems very political, but... We were. The capitol was built with slave labor. Denying it seems insulting.

Luckily, when we fought a war over it, the people who didn't fight on the side of slavery won.

the southern economy was based on it and the northern economy did business with it. Denying it only reveals lack of knowledge, at best.

regarding the degradation of women, ummm yes it was a patriarchal system, not as severe as the modern Afghanistan but still built around women as second class citizens, only baby machines. but we digress from the topic in this site.
