Don't forget:

by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign
goes without saying! (in particular because it's on the CT inspiration board more than once :))

but since you mention it, worth also mentioning that Giugiaro *also* designed several of the *other* vehicles I listed above - and several more that I didn't but that also fit the bill

if you’re able to read the copy, he even talks about adaptable air suspension etc

his earlier “Brubaker Box” was the predecessor to the mini-van… but based on the VW bug platform :)

generally, Brubaker was thinking about how there is some need between cars at the time, vs the then-limited utilitarian pickup trucks available

This post was a huge throwback for me today, as my age clicks another one over and into the half century. I remember looking at many of those cars as a kid, and was always completely fascinated by the edgy designs, I loved the Lotus Bond submarine, even though I never saw the movie until I was an adult.

I completely agree that we need to have dreams to aspire too, but sometimes in design, previous design dreams are what inspire. Thanks for that. 😊

Love finally getting a glimpse at the CT inspiration board.

It partially confirms my long-held belief that the inspiration isn't merely "sci fi," it's specifically late 60's to late 70's auto design and prototype language.

When people talk about the CT looking "futuristic," I personally think they're looking the exactly wrong direction on the timeline. The CT looks positively late 1960's Italian prototype design language, for what people in the 1970's thought the future would look like.

I collect Italian modern furniture from this era, and while that doesn't include collecting vehicles, I'm roughly familiar with a lot of the forward-looking auto design from that era.

That era of car design is referred to as "the wedge era"

The vehicles shown are largely from this era (e.g., Delorean, bond's concept car-sub), the movies are trailing and reflecting this ear (bladerunner, robocop). And to the extent the moodboard shows modern boats, etc., those designs themselves are speaking the late 60s italian design language.

As with most things design of the time, the Italian's were at the forefront in the late 1960's, and the rest of the world caught up eventually throughout the 1970s and into the early 1980's.

Funny quote from someone that put falcon wings on an SUV!😂
difference between "do less with less" and "do more with less"

one of my personal favorite examples of this is Achille Castiglioni's "Sella" stool of 1957

Tesla Cybertruck Walter Isaacson (Musk biographer) gives insight on Cybertruck's inception + early sketches / design inspiration board 1689704274225

On first glance, one correctly thinks this piece is built of spare bicycle parts, but incorrectly thinks it's gimmicky

But the genesis of the Sella stool was borne of the use case and context: in the 1950's of Italy, the home's telephone was invariably installed in the home's/apartment's entryway hall. These, eg, Milanese apartment hallways didn't leave room for a chair to sit in while talking on the (wall-wired) phone. Plus, people like to fidget and pace while talking on the phone.

The Sella, on the other hand, tucked under the phone in the hallway without impeding the space, and provide for a rocking, figgity, yelling at your cousin in Italian sort use telephone stool.

These ubiquitous spare bicycle parts provided more utility than could any traditional chair. But, with some playfulness and childlike whimsy thrown in.

Like falcon wings :)

Walter Isaacson:

"About 6 years ago, he (Elon Musk) is sitting there with @woodhaus2 and they're looking at a Ford truck. He (Elon) says these things are boring. He doesn't like to be bored. He puts up things from movies, from sci-fi, from video games, and everybody is pushing back on him at this meeting. He finally says stop it, we're going to do it. We're going to make it edgy."
"In my book, https://amazon.com/Elon-Musk-Walter-Isaacson/dp/1982181281, I describe how on one Friday in 2017, @elonmusk decreed, “We are going to do this whole thing in stainless steel.” I note: "The use of stainless steel opened up new possibilities for the look of the truck. Instead of using stamping machines that would sculpt carbon fiber into body panels with subtle curves and shapes, stainless steel would favor straight planes and sharp angles. That allowed— and in some ways forced— the design team to explore ideas that were more futuristic, edgier, even jarring.""

I love concept art. That super low and wide concept looks sick. Those sci-if inspired boards are awesome, too. The CyberTruck is very retro futuristic. I really can’t wait to see one of these on the streets. I won’t be able to afford it. Still holding out for the CyberHatch. 😜

Looks like they just printed out all of the "what will the Cybertruck look like" fan art that was on the internet before the 2019 reveal. I'll still end up buying the CT in its current form, but I also still would've preferred the mini Semi look that floated around briefly.

Tbh I think it's more likely that they leaked some of these and watched reactions. I swear I've seen a couple of these pre launch day

Holy cow, a wooden bumper....Could you imagine? Not exactly pedestrian friendly (but very eco-friendly and easy to replace!)

the Box's bumper fooled a lot of people, intentionally, in that it was actually a composite bumper in wood grain stamping/forming

I was ready for anything on reveal night. Without even trying to imagine what Tesla would come up with I was excited to see what a truck that didn't have to design itself around an engine, transmission and massive radiator would/could look like. To start with a skateboard and only needing to constrain yourself with passengers and their safety, the sky and the sea was the limit.

I was open to dolphin or bird shapes since aero is so important, I truly thought that the model that rolled onto stage was a joke. Not a joke as in "you've got to be kidding me!" joke, but a joke as in, the sides would fall away with the actual design revealed from beneath. When everyone got out, and you could see that there wasn't something hiding inside, I still wasn't sure. It was ugly. As Elon described the exo-skeleton, and the limitations of working with Stainless Steel, I reluctantly started to give it a chance. If the shape was essential to it's strength... maybe...

But as soon as I saw the range and towing of the Tri-Motor, I was ALL IN! If it'll do that, I don't give a $#?+ what it looks like. Form follows function means that all trucks will tend to look this way eventually. Familiarity will lead to acceptance. (I remember when Ram Trucks came out with the humped hood and fenders in the 80's and I swore nobody would ever buy one. Now it's avant-garde to look otherwise)

Now that it's clear that the exo-skeleton isn't a real thing, the shape no longer essential to its strength, I wish it weren't so angular and boxy. Shapes in nature prove that it could've been more aerodynamic with gentle curves. The point at the top means that it could have been a tad shorter and had bigger rear side windows if they hadn't gotten hung up on the shape of the prototype. It's a shame that the compromises for exo-skeleton form aren't even functionally necessary.

And no, don't get your hopes up, I'm not moving anyone up in the queue by cancelling. I still want the performance and don't really care what it looks like if that's the only way I can get it.

I heard it only looked like wood. It was actually made from pressed, recycled paper. 🤣

But then, I guess wood is really only pre-cycled paper.

Thought this would be fun/didn't want to work - any anime, etc., fans that can help fill these out? If a movie/show is set in a certain time period, would be interesting to know.

Difference is that this will go into actual full scale production - the predominance of all the examples you listed were all prototypes or concepts that never made it past one or two examples
Well, there were thousands and thousands of Matchbox Car versions. I had most of those in my collection when I was a pup in the '70s!
