When do you think we’ll get our first CyberTruck model update? And what will it be?

I had to pass on my reservation because I just need more range for my use case, but still dearly want to get a cybertruck. So I put down for another deposit hoping in the next year or 2, we will get some upgrade for a truck with more range. Hopefully to the originally promised 500m range.

Im not interested in the range extender pack, not only because it eats into the bed, but it will likely severely hurt handling by putting in a heavy pendulum weight raising the center of gravity.

So I’m hoping after some of the initial demand has been soaked up, Tesla will need to release an upgraded model with better range, and my hope/guess is that will happen around 2026.

Curious s to what others think about when and what the first new upgrade/models will be? Maybe a 4 motor version first?

Not seeing 500 miles of range based on current battery technology. Maybe with some mix of ultracapacitors for fast-charging and solid state or flow batteries, but then you're looking a decade away.

For most use cases, having more superchargers is a better investment, in the aggregate, then pushing more battery capacity into each piece of equipment. That results in too many underutilized batteries being lugged around for hundreds of millions of miles which contravenes Tesla's corporate goals.

If you want big batteries, it looks like GM is the only game in that town, and that's not an efficiency minded place.

Imagine back in 2017 you were unhappy about something - say, the range - about the then-new Model 3. And so decided to wait a bit, hoping to see a "model update."

You'd still be waiting.

Tesla does continual improvement, both in hardware and software. But Tesla doesn't do big feature changes every few years, like the ICE OEM's often do. And, as @carsly notes, a breakthrough new battery technology that would give substantially better range is probably many years away.

It's probably also worth noting that Tesla is the only major EV maker who makes a profit on their vehicles. It's a trivial engineering exercise to throw a honking big pack in a vehicle, like Chevy did with the Silverado. It's another thing altogether to do that and make money on it.

There's a reason why the Cybertruck has a 123 kWh pack, and the range that it does.

Ahh the better thing to come along question. Always present in Tesla world.

One should remember the other world. Other OEM's are just getting into over the air updates, and bettering the existing ownership experience post sale. I might add they suck at it right now. Tesla has made it a masterclass, and fixes many recalls before they are announced.

Fitting range for a specific use is usually fraught with future problems. One is usually pushing the range envelope at the beginning of ownership. With slight declines down the road as expected.

As others have mentioned. Superchargers fill the void. If one can't handle the extra supercharger cost. Maybe wrong scenario overall.

I guess I could have waited for the 400 mile range S. That would have been 6 years of waiting. I started at 335. So I guess one can wait, and wait some more, and wait some more.

Cars will be perfect when they don't have wheels, and I can lay down and sleep.

Tesla just did a physical recall faster than it was announced!

I think they could add a "long range" version. Perhaps the current battery size is also a function of being battery contained. In that case, a larger battery would result is a slower ramp. If battery production is ahead of vehicle production, a larger pack makes sense.

It took Tesla a few years from the Model S original release to make any body changes to the outside design. Same with the other models. My assumption is it’ll be at least 5 years before we see a visual refresh.

However it may be a different story for the inside tech. I’d give that 1-3 years.

The next change will be HW5 or whatever they will call it(likely something with AI in the name). Right now the CT has HW4. HW4 in the Model Y is being used in a HW3 compatibility mode, meaning the cameras are downscaled, so there is unused potential in HW4 still.

I assume the same will be true for HW5, that it will be used with a backwards compatible AI model for some time. This saves Tesla on development time and unifies the model across the fleet.

Visually, I bet Tesla doesnt change the CT appearance for at least 7 years. For a few reasons:
  • CT will be lower volume due to price
  • Stainless Steel is harder to work with, and there is less flexibility in design
  • Large investments in tooling were made for CT production, they will want to recoup those costs.
The wildcard is a global CT model, that will require a redesign if they want to sell it in other markets.

Lastly, I think the CT line will be like the Jeep Wrangler, its appearance will remain consistent for decades.

Fix the inadequate center console. I want something to block up and separate the center footwell. It's a matter of time before my water bottle or hard sunglass case rolls away and towards the pedals. 😬

I do wish there was something a bit higher there. My gf's purse needs to be constantly kicked back over to her side, so it doesn't end up on the pedal.

I think a R1T that's faster than the Beast could result in a quad motor CT. < 2.0 second 0-60 acceleration. Maybe this is the one with a few more batteries inside. If this makes the tri-motor useless, then they may scrap that trim and do 1, 2, and 4 in 2026.
