Was thinking about this earlier. The earnings call is in a couple of days and it seems pretty clear that’s part of why the truck proto is there. So why let a couple rando’s and an unknown photographer scoop the big reveal?

My theory is they have enough going on at the earnings call that they want to maximize the news cycle here.

Unleash the beast today via these guys. Then at earnings we get:
  • Record revenue and earnings
  • Austin and Berlin production start announcements (maybe actual deliveries still a few weeks off)
  • 4680 cell production news (Panasonic is coming in 2023 and Tesla’s Austin production is moving fast)
  • Product Roadmap
    • Tesla semi ship status (Pepsi??)
    • Model Y with 4680 sounds like a lock from Austin!
    • Cybertruck !!!!!!! Hopefully some good news here
  • Updates on Shanghai and Fremont production which seem to be smashing all production records.
  • Something new??
Anyhow… I think as important and significant as this unveil is, I think has been pushed out in favor of other news and the earnings.

Because it’s an earnings call. There’s typically no video.

If intentionally leaked, which I believe occurred, the footage must not be considered the biggest of news.

if there was undesired leadership news, the footage would be held to distract away.

The best news, delivery starting with reservation number 190,000. Belief begins with repetition. ?

If not intentionally leaked, @ Tesla, bodies harm the integrity of cement.

(edit, corrected some typos, probably more)

These things tend to leak when you don't have a strong marketing and PR team to keep them super tight. Apple and Nike spend so much money on keeping things secret and then a massive controlled reveal. The marketing cost of this... nothing. Great spend in my opinion. Have everyone clamoring for details and allow random people to leak the photo. Plausible deniability and excellent marketing spend... zero!

The CT has a million plus pre-orders and lives rent-free in every EV journo's head (love it or hate it), so the answer is...

It doesn't matter.

The leaks don't deflate the hype, doesn't hurt the image, and don't cost a dime.

Maybe it is that simple.

If history is any indication, all that great news will lead to a dip and a buying opportunity.
