New (1/30/2023) research at Stanford explains why lithium metal batteries with solid electrolytes short. TLDR: “Just modest indentation, bending or twisting of the batteries can cause nanoscopic fissures in the materials to open and lithium to intrude into the solid electrolyte causing it to short circuit”

If you isolate the battery from bending or twisting, can you use it as a structural member of the vehicle? I am hoping for a solid state battery with the weight benefits of structural. Any thoughts from experts in our community?
