Title of thread:
I got a CyberSpoon...

Is it a true exoskeleton or stainless panels glued on to a unibody?
What would be a 'true exoskeleton'? If forces are transferred to the skin panels, is that a true exoskeleton? If it's a unibody, why isn't it a true exoskeleton?

We've had this discussion so many times before. An exoskeleton is just 'on the outside'. So the lift used by Ridley in Alien? Exoskeleton. Having differing thicknesses and bulkheads glued to the shell? Crab exoskeleton.

-Crissa
Having a high skull to brain ratio is also an exoskeleton.

Can't even make a joke about it anymore....far out buttercup.
Dude, personal insults aren't cool.

-Crissa
I'm pretty sure that the comment from Eye of Elon was in relation to the Cyberspoon, and was purely in jest, seeing the Cyberspoon has no panels to speak of.

Our response can't ALWAYS be what "we want" to think the other person said, so we can continue on with our own thoughts unchecked, to hammer another forum user on how they are wrong, and have been for ages, and don't know what they are talking about etc. etc.

Likewise, my comment was in jest to demonstrate that being thick headed about something, doesn't necessarily mean someone is right, nor does that mean one should admonish another user because they made a joke about a spoon?

Now if you took offence, then I sincerely apologise, it was not my intention.
I just hope that you can understand why I responded to your post, like many others, that way.

I've noticed a distinct and obvious change in Jbee's personality recently, and it's not flattering!
That might well be so.

I have decided to cut down on having the same arguments without an outcome, for or against, and have decided to just make a list of people to follow, and just start selectively talking to people that might be interesting.

Others, I will just rebutt if their nonsense is out of line and just straight out mis-information, but I won't engage with much effort, that apparently just goes to waste.

Sincerely, I participate here to share information, that works both ways, and hopefully, at some point we can come closer to the truth by listening to each other. I couldn't be bothered having one way conversations. Listening appears to be rare.

I believe negative feedback loops are important to self-correct.

But lately, it's often the case that tribalism just takes over the conversation, and you have to start SHOUTING to be heard. There's just so much grand standing, I couldn't be bothered with that side of it anymore, just to keep a reasonable, interesting or technical discussion going.

I get people have egos, even me, and I don't want to be overly sensitive, but after a while it makes you question if the end result is worth it, after so many years of contributing here.

IF we were talking face to face, I dare say none of us would be that way.
IF we did talk like that face to face, then we'd all run for the door to get out of the room.

Just because we all sit protected behind a screen and a keyboard, acting detached from the other side of the world, doesn't mean that we all haven't at a minimum become "acquaintances", over the years that we have been talking to each other. I'm sure we do know "something" about eachother, that is of value.

Some here are even new friends, and that does make me happy, and I think that is worth while, and worth every effort.

I'm not here to make enemies, or make people unhappy, nor get my ego stroked.

I'm here to help and share if I can, and learn if I can't.

Now on top of the above, if you add a bunch of complaints that I've been getting PMs for, from other users that have been censored (like me as well), or kicked off the forum, for on topic, non-political comments btw, I seriously question if I should be supporting a forum that is run like that, by investing my finite time here, and producing content that might bring in clicks.

There is definitely an anti-Elon Musk vibe here, which I find bizarre given that the forum is for a Tesla product that would never have come into existence without him. Sure you don't have to agree with everything he says, I don't either.

But likewise, even the admin here is only a human and can be wrong, and should be able to take a complaint seriously. We are the forum, and not the admin. Without us there would be a forum of one.

So although I enjoy the banter, I think I am hoping to form some more serious, respectful relationships with people that share common interests on the forum, rather than going through the daily wash of tit for tat, from people that should maybe know me better by now, after such a long time.

Sincerely
JBee

Sorry. ?

I like the Cyberspoon. :D

Have you got a 3D printer?

I wouldn't mind modelling it in CAD and 3D printing it in silver PLA.
Happy to share the model if anyone's interested.

Maybe we could come up with a whole range of Cyber cutlery?

I suppose if we follow the same theme as the spoon, we could easily make a fork, by making forks in the end of the spoon.

Next, for the knife I was thinking maybe a stretched outline of the CT, with the short windscreen edge as the cutting edge. You'd have to hold it up side down to cut, but ergonomically, I think that would be the best way to make that shape useful.

Next would be a few larger versions for desert/soup, and then salad spoons or maybe even some cooking utensils.

I'm also thinking that there might be a more common design theme that can be used across all of them. I'll do some modelling, and see what I can come up with, and post them back here for review and comment. Or maybe I'll start a new thread?

Any ideas welcome of course :)

Knives would be the perfect translation of the CT theme. Think about the long side of the 2D profile is the cutting edge. So think of the profile of the CT, turn it upside down, sharpen the edge from the peak to the tailgate, attach the handle to the frunk front/bumper.

And take the spoon, and make it a SPORK!

That's the other way round to what I was thinking, but it might work better.

Might have to dig out my CNC and make some out of actual stainless, to see how they turn out.
But first I'll model them in 3D so we can see if they look like something.

Steak knives with 3mm 304? Might be too thick...

Wait, a CT pocket knife with a 3mm blade. Say about 4'/100mm for the blade? The handle could also mimic the blade when folded. So they would be a mirror when unfolded. On the handle, the windshield would be for your index finger and the other 3 wrap around the "back seat and vault" area. I'm really liking this one...

I actually have made a few custom tools for the UAV stuff we do, let alone custom aircraft as you know. There would be a niche for cybertools as well. From a production standpoint, you'd want to use a laser cutter for 3mm stainless, which is not trivial. It sort of has to be stainless, but maybe we can be a bit flexible with the 3mm thickness?

Do you know how thick the Cyberspoon is?

BTW My grandpop use to make knives and do engravings etc in his workshop in Solingen, the knife center of Germany. Maybe I should carry on the family tradition? I remember when I was five, going out back to the workshop and visiting him whilst he worked, always had a chocolate in his tin for me. He used to do the etching as well, and the chemical smell was pretty strong, so he was always pretty strict in keeping us out when he used it. So next time you see a pre-80's knife with "Solingen" engraved on it, you might be holding some of my pops working legacy. :)

My spoon is on its way from China. As soon as it gets here, I'll be all over it with a micrometer. I won't post about it without dimensions, any compressor or electrical outlets, a view of the back seat (if any), or all the other details!

Your grandpop sounds pretty cool. It's funny, our parents try to keep candy and what not away from us, but you can always trust your grandparents to break the rules and give you a taste. Man, that is bringing back a flood of really cool memories. So, thank you for that.

I think carrying on some family traditions are of value even if it's not a full time thing. I'd encourage you just to start up a little side gig and even if you build just a few a year, I think it'll be good for your mind, your memories, your connection. And while you're at it, teach the kids and grandkids. With all the tech out there, we sometimes are too quick to discard our connections.
