Reconsidering My CT order, YouTube Reviewers stating it's another Edsel, worst new car flop ever

I am seeing many Youtube posts making the case for the Cybertruck being a total failure and even surpassing the Edsel as the worst new car failure ever.
I have a Foundation CT on order, awaiting recall repairs for the cantrail issue so I haven't received my CT yet.
I am growing concerned that maybe this purchase is a mistake. The FUD is working.
Also, I am thinking if I hold out a little longer, until the 1st quater earnings call, maybe there will be some serious additional incentives on the CT if Tesla really does need to start moving these trucks due to super low sales and all the issues with panels falling off, etc.

I viewed that opinion piece by Forbes as well. It was very negative slant towards the Cybertruck aimed at getting clicks.

The 8 recalls until now seems high until you realize the truck is on a brand platform using novel manufacturing and assembly techniques never attempted before. The truck is loaded with high tech as well such as SBW, RWS, 48 volt architecture, etc.

I do think the truck will remain a low volume vehicle for Tesla. Leadership overestimated the demand for a BEV full size pickup truck in America. Buyers have spoken and they prefer fossil fueled pick up trucks.

There are plenty of vehicles which sell 30k a year on the road, so it's hard to say what will happen to the CT. If they keep the average sale price over $80k and sell 30k of them, it's a success by some metric. Though the thought they'd have a 250k unit per year vehicle makes it a big failure.

I feel like they put too much money into the CT to walk away from it. They will just need to convert most of the capacity to another vehicle.

The 1Q 2025 earnings call is scheduled for April 22. Tesla has already revealed that quarterly vehicle sales were unimpressive, and so it seems possible that quarterly earnings will be unimpressive as well.

But even if that is true, it doesn't mean that Tesla would immediately offer incentives on the CT or other vehicles. April 22 is still pretty close to the beginning of the quarter. Tesla (and other auto companies) typically offer the best incentives near the end of the quarter. For example, the recent 1.99% financing deal on the CT was introduced in March 2025, which was the final month of 1Q 2025.

It does seems like Tesla needs to do something to move the remaining Foundation Series and other 2024 CTs. But the most likely time for any "serious additional incentives" wouldn't be until late May or June. So you might need to hold out more than "a little longer" for them.

I almost didn’t buy due to clickbait.

Then I actually drove one. It was so much better than anything else I looked at and it wasn’t even close.

The Cybertruck gets clicks / views online. Negative press gets more clicks than positive press. Clicks are how the media, including influencers online make money.

I’ve had zero issues with my truck other than people being nasty here and there. The truck itself is amazing.

…but what you are saying is a valid concern. Even even if it’s the right vehicle for you, you are going to have to know that you will have a bunch of people in your life that are seeing the same videos… and then you’re going to find yourself having to be on the receiving end if “I heard XYZ” exaggerated claim from a clickbait article, post or video.

My other line of thinking is that if the CT is a total financial failure for Tesla, my Cybertruck will become an instant classic and incredibly valuable as a collectable. I wish I had an Edsel or a Corvair!

Not that I’m rooting for this, but if Tesla cut production, then of course they will go up and value. Nothing will ever be built like this again.

I see the more likely scenario it just being a niche / premium vehicle. That’s also not the worst thing for current owners.

The worst thing for current owners is if they go all in, sell it at a huge loss like other manufacturers, and sell new AWD’s for $40-50k. Also seems unlikely but you never know.

It’s sad because that means manufacturers won’t take risks and everything will more or less look the same. But it also feels like that’s what people want. A little quirk, or neat feature, or certain derivative of current styling.

As someone who recently acquired the vehicle in question, and was bombarded by negativity prior too acquiring the vehicle, and as long as you had firm reasoning for wanting the CT, I would do it again. Albeit I’ve had the vehicle 3wks and as such could only give a limited review.

The vehicle definitely feels satisfying to drive and the interior is less cheap than the proclaimed YouTubers proclaim. The features have been working well with no issues. I had to request another appointment to have them address the cantrails post recall as fitment is lacking. So this is a nuisance but hopefully minor issue.

If you are worried about what others think though you might have issues, it is still a polarizing issue in some conversations, but on the road I’ve had no issues, 2 positive incidents.

Let's see. So you got a discounted price. And you got 1.99% financing. And since you selected a Foundation Series, you should be getting Free Supercharging as well. This is a pretty good deal, comparatively speaking -- there are plenty of FS owners on this forum who didn't get any of those things.

Could the deal get even better if you wait? Possibly yes, but as stated above (1) it most likely wouldn't happen until another 6-8 weeks have gone by, and (2) Tesla is unpredictable.

I am not worried about what others think, and actually, I will really enjoy the many reactions from others about my CT that I anticipate, short of violence and vandalism. Life will just be that much more interesting!

You will not regret it. The vehicle is incredible. If I had to buy one again, I would get another FS given the discounts and free supercharging.

Coming up on 20k miles in 1 year of ownership and I simply love my Cybertruck for so many reasons.

Turn off the media and do what makes you happy.

It’s a business flop. Won’t sell anywhere near how much they had planned. The headlines are crafted to make it seem like it flopped because it’s a bad car. It’s too expensive and polarizing for a lot of people so there aren’t many buyers. But I think the vast majority of owners are happy with their trucks.
