Love what you guys are doing, but I can’t get over how the charge port and camera areas are integrated. There has to be a better way to do this.
Why can’t the charge port be a section that also opens with the flap?
I would like to understand what manufacturers are running into because everybody’s design is like this, i.e. ā€œbad.ā€

Their clearly has to be a problem with the way that it hinges that’s preventing people from doing the obvious (which seems to be just make a proportionally bigger door).

These cut outs though, no offense intended, are a dealbreaker for me. UPs design is similar.

Hard NOPE.

Looks are subjective, we get that. No offense taken. I will say, see it in person and it looks really nice. Our stuff also fits properly, works properly (fully functional charge door), and complies with all safety, ADAS and self driving.

That said, this is no easy / trivial matter - nuanced with many reason 'why' it is not practical or easy to just move the charge door and/or cameras or make it in a different way. I won't run every reason or detail here, but a few of the bigger issues are that the charge door 'flap' on the back side causes interference with the body (zero space to work with). Our solution works, functions, looks complete when installed - we are unwilling to have anything that is non-functional, sketchy from a works perspective, or incomplete -- so that rules most other 'ideas' out. Further, compromising ADAS safety or camera functionality is a non-starter for us as well. Our product is compliant, causes ZERO issue with cameras, self-driving, and all ADAS. Compromising any of these things in the name of looks - not in the cards for us. So....with these constraints, we've done what we've done. Some folks love it and we're happy to serve them! For anyone that 'hates it' or hard stops or whatever --- hey no hard feelings, move on, it's not for you!

Now, this is just my opinion, and it’s a guess, but for any niche after market supplier (insert name of anyone making these kits). I would not want the liability or expense of ā€œadulteratingā€ that charge port door or any critical camera positions view. Those all tie directly into the vehicles computer and safety systems. For a relativity low volume vehicle, with an even lower subset percentage of owners who are, or would even contemplate actually getting these kits, the numbers to me, would not pass the cost benefit analysis of designing a truly integrated and engineered solution (much less one actually approved by the OEM). As a manufacturer, I wouldn’t likely touch it either, way too much liability.

I would not want to field a warranty call on a charge door issue, much less a lawyer letter saying that my business is now being notified of a a subrogation claim.

When I see these areas done like they are, this is exactly my thought, and why I look past it.

If you look at this design it still has carbon fiber pieces that cover the flap. It’s not about just not covering the flap, as I said, I’m confident that it’s because the way the door is hinged it messes with any cover that you would put on it at this exaggerated size that doesn’t have some complex geometry/hinging to allow it to flip open.

It’s hinged at the very tippy top. There’s no cameras on the rear wheel well. And I don’t have a problem with what they’ve come up with for the front end. If that was all, they’d already have my money.

As I said I don’t know exactly what the problem is (I’m not an engineer) but everybody has clearly run into it and nobody has, as far as I’m concerned, come up with an aesthetically satisfactory solution yet.

But, yes we can all agree don’t design product liability into your solution.

Get so far and then to come up with that plug situation. Hard no. Husband would be crying if this was a father's day gift. So would his wife.
