NJ Anti-Incentives for EV Adoption

Why would I pay for what YOU want?
I'm relatively happen with Georgia's solution, more than I want to pay, but any new "tax" is going to be more than you want to pay.
I've been paying on multiple EVs ever since it was created.

And I smile every year as I don't have to have an emissions inspection!

I love that I no longer have a vehicle that I have to take to the NJ Inspection Stations, so I'm with ya on that part.

It's not you are paying for what I want. It's paying for what's more fair for everyone.

As I was checking if the old NJ $4K state rebate for buying or leasing a new, eligible zero-emission vehicle got renewed for 2024 (it did not), I came across an anti-incentive. New Jersey signed a law approving a punitive new EV registration fee – and at $250, it's the highest in the country? New Jersey's EV registration fee kicks in July 1, and then rises by $10 each year before it caps out at $290 in July 2028. Apparently this is to make up for the fact that we EV owners are no longer paying the Gas Tax and contributing to the Transportation Fund.

For any of the recent CT NJ buyers, was your over $100K CT vehicle still totally NJ State Sales Tax free? That is worth something!

I guess we can’t all live in Colorado and enjoy their $5K refundable state tax credit.

Having an EV in Colorado, my model Y registration was $1800 for the year.
I would love it, if it were $290!

You seem to miss the point that I'm not the one complaining. I've come to my rationalization that our current solution is about the best it is going to be.

They’re high regardless of EV or ICE.

Georgia changed from the ad valorem taxes that occur yearly, as it appears these may be, to pay everything up front.
It was a pay me now or later type thing.

It's much more palatable for most, to pay taxes up front and then a fixed registration fee. (and EV road tax)

I agree with you but I refuse to settle for less when gov. has all this money to implement a better solution. Yet gov. seems to focus on the wrong things. However, there is nothing that could be done about this b/c we have no power over ANY policy.

For example, ChargeUp NJ. We don't need more funding for chargers. Every EV buyer will need to install a charger at his/her home with or without a rebate to make driving an EV practical. Once chargers are installed, they will be used for years to come. If someone gets into an accident and the EV is totaled, that person will need to buy a new car without incentives towards the purchase (EV sales tax exemption), making it difficult for NJ to reach its goal of no ICE by 2035.

Gov. seems very dysfunctional and out of touch with modern technology. I bet a lot of these lawmakers don't own EVs as their daily drivers.

I have the same frustration about why Apple Driver's License is still not supported. Initially, State of CA refused to use Apple's solution and claimed to have a "better" solution that would be rolled out. What makes you think you would have a better solution than a 3T company just headquartered miles away from you? I just think these policymakers are out of touch and there is nothing we, as citizens, can do about it. (Forget about voting. Certain constituents will always vote for the same person for years to come. Someone with a new mindset won't gather enough support so he/she will never be nominated. ). It's a dysfunctional democracy and a catch-22.

The alternative is the odometer police. Do you want to have to take your vehicle in and the odometer checked every year?

Why not honor system with penalties for people who get it wrong, but mostly just true up when cars are transferred? Or get smogged, whatever?

We do elect the government but we as EV drivers, who are the minority in most districts, won’t move the needle. I want cheap $10K BYD too but that will never happen in USA.

If you think your vote can make a difference, why do we still have high health care costs, school shootings high crime rates , and other issues in this country? Other countries don’t have these issues so solutions are possible not magical.

The core of the problem is US operates with majority wins regardless of whether the majority is right or not. When the majority is wrong, the actions carried out by the majority are harmful to the US and we bear the consequences for years to come.

Don't shoot the messenger. Georgia went through this a few years back, one of the first (i.e. I've been paying for it longer than most). The EV groups got involved and the results are the compromise.

The biggest problem is how it is collected, it's that the tax was calculated based on effectively the worst-case gas tax revenue. i.e. based on large pickup when calculating Model 3 or any EV costs.

Of course, the Cybertruck does make it a little less unequal.
